Q-1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow. (10)

(1) Unsafe water kills more people each year than do war and all other forms of violence
combined . Meanwhile,our drinkable water sources are finite: less than 1 per cent of the Earth 's
fresh water is actually accessible to us.Without action, the challenges will only increase by 2050,
when global demand for fresh water is expected to be one-third greater than it is now.

(2) Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution.Known as a "universal solvent", water is able to
dissolve more substances than any other liquid on Earth . Water pollution is the release of
substances into subsurface groundwater or into lakes,streams, rivers, estuaries, and oceans to
the point where substances interfere with beneficial use of the water or with the natural
functioning of ecosystems.In addition to the release of substances, such as chemicals, trash,or
microorganisms, water pollution may also include the release of energy, in the form of
radioactivity or heat, into bodies of water.The key causative of water pollution in India are
urbanization, deforestation, industrial effluents and agricultural run-offs with the use of
insecticides and pesticides.The other causes are social and religious offerings in water bodies
and the use of detergents and fertilizers.

(3) Water pollution can have disastrous consequences on the ecosystem.Furthermore, toxic
chemicals can travel through the food chain and get into our bodies, causing diseases and

death

(4 ) There is no single or simple answer to stop the water pollution crisis.However, there are
many solutions to prevent water pollution,both in our daily lives and within industries.They are
wastewater treatment, reducing plastic waste and water conservation.In addition to this,we
must have water -efficient toilets,stormwater management and ozone wastewater treatment.

(5) Some of major causes of water pollution are:oil pollution,oil spill, septic tank water parks,
intensive farming, pesticides, swimming, industrial waste, household waste, water storage tanks,
nuclear waste etc.

Q.2 Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow. (10)

(1) Though more than a decade has passed since the E-waste (Management and Handling)
Rules came into effect in May 2012, their implementation is still in a nascent stage ,at least in
Varanasi,one of the major cities of Uttar Pradesh.In fact, the state ranks among the 10 largest e-
waste generating states in India.

(2) The e-waste Rules 2011 mandate for safe disposal of electronic and electrical wastes
through private bodies.According to the UPSPCB official,it is mandatory for the municipal
corporation to provide a site to the private firm for proper disposal of e-waste.The site for this
purpose has been made available in Ram Nagar area,he said.The E-waste ( Management and
Handling) Rules 2011also suggest that it is the responsibility of the municipal corporation to
ensure that e-waste ,if found to be mixed with municipal solid waste,is properly segregated,
collected and is channelized to either authorized collection centre or dismantler or recycler.

(3) The Research Unit of Rajya Sabha has compiled a comprehensive report on e-waste in
According to the report, there are ten states that contribute up to 70 per cent of the total e-
waste generated in the country, while 65 cities generate more than 60 per cent of the total e-
waste in Among the ten largest e-waste generating states, Maharashtra ranks first followed by
Tamil Nadu,Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Gujarat,Madhya
Pradesh and Punjab.

(4) Globally, about 20-50 MT of e-waste is disposed of each year, which accounts for 5% of all
municipal solid waste . A report of the United Nations predicted that by 2030 e-waste from old
computers would jump by 400 per cent on 2007 levels in China and by 500 per cent in
India.Additionally , e-waste from discarded mobile phones would be about seven times higher
than 2007 levels and, in India,18 times higher by 2030.Such prediction highlight the urgent need
to address the problem of e-waste in developing countries like India where the collection and
management of e-waste and the recycling process is yet to be properly regulated.

(5) E-waste releases many toxic substances that are serious health hazards.Unless suitable
safety measures are taken, these toxic substances can critically affect the health of employees
and others in the vicinity - who manually sort and treat the waste -- by entering their body
through respiratory tracts, through the skin,or through the mucous membrane of the mouth and
the digestive tract.Therefore , the health impact of e-waste is evident.There is no doubt that it
has been linked to the growing incidence of several lethal or severely debilitating health
conditions, including cancer, neurological and respiratory disorders, and birth defects.
