General Instructions:
(i) This Question paper comprises Six Sections – A, B, C, D, E and F. Overall there are
14 questions in the question paper. All questions are compulsory.
(ii) Section A- Question number 1.i to 1.xv, are MCQs of 1 mark each.
(iii) Section B- Question number 2 to 5, are Very Short Answer Type Questions, carrying
2 marks each. Answer to each question should not exceed 20 words.
(iv) Section C- Question number 6 and 7, are Short Answer Type Questions, carrying 3
marks each. Answer to each question should not exceed 40 words.
(v) Section D- Question number 8 and 9 are long answer type questions, carrying 5
marks each. Answer to each question should not exceed 80 words.
(vi) Section E- Questions number from 10 to 13 are case based questions carrying 4
marks each. Each question has three sub questions.
(vii) Section F- Question number 14 is map based question, carrying 5 marks.
(viii) Separate questions are given for Visually Impaired Students Only in lieu of
Question number 14.
(ix) There is no overall choice in the question paper. However, an internal choice has
been provided in few questions. Only one of the choices in such questions have to
be attempted.
(x) In addition to this, separate instructions are given with each section and question,
wherever necessary.

10. Read the Passage given below and answer the following Questions. 4
Mapping the Earth is a little more difficult because our planet is not a flat
surface. It nearly has the shape of a sphere. (We say ‘nearly’ because it is not
a perfect sphere, but is slightly flattened at the poles. However, in practice, we
will consider it to be spherical.) Representing a sphere accurately on a flat
sheet of paper is not possible. To understand why, peel an orange in such a
way that you have just three or four large pieces of the skin; then try and
flatten them on a table — you will see that you cannot do it without tearing
them at the edges.
Now, consider a globe, which is a sphere on which a map is drawn. This may
be a map of the Earth, the Moon, the planet Mars, the stars and constellations
in the sky, etc. The physical object, like the one shown in the drawing on the
next page, is a sphere that is generally made of metal, plastic or cardboard.
Here we will study the globe representing the Earth’s geography. Because the
globe and the Earth have the same spherical shape, a globe will better
represent the geography of the Earth than a flat map.

You may have noticed that we earlier mentioned ‘representatives of the
people’. This is one of the foundation stones of the system of governance
adopted by most countries of the world — democracy. The word ‘democracy’

comes from two Greek words — dēmos meaning ‘people’, and kratos meaning
‘rule’ or ‘power’; so ‘democracy’ literally means the ‘rule of the people’.

लगभग गोलाकार है (हम ‘लगभग’ इसिलए कहते ह ोंिक यह पूण गोलाकार नही ं है , अिपतु ुवों पर थोड़ी
चपटी है । इसे इसे ावहा रक ि से गोलाकार मानोगे)। इसका मतलब पृ ी पर एक गोलाकार सतह को
समतल सतह पर उतारना संभव नहीं है। इस सम ा के समाधान के िलए पृ ी के छोटे भागों को समतल
सतह पर उतारा गया। इससे केवल सीिमत े का मानिच बन पाया जबिक पृ ी के पूरे भाग का उतारना
किठन हो गया। एक े म बनी चपटी सतह अ े की सतह की तुलना म ठीक न बैठ पाती और यह
ित उ हो जाती है।
अब एक ोब का िवचार कीिजए, जो एक गोल आकृित वाला है और उस पर एक मानिच बनाया गया है।
यह पृ ी, भू िम, महासागर तथा उनके अनुपाितक े फल का सही ितिनिध करता है। जै से मानिच पर
हम एक समतल सतह पर पृ ी का िच बनाते ह, वैसे ही ोब पर पृ ी का ि िवम ( ी डायमशन) प
दे खा जा सकता है। ोब धातु, लकड़ी, ा क या िकसी भी अ िटकाऊ पदाथ से बने होते ह।
वैसे पृ ी के भू गोल का ितिनिध करने का सबसे सही साधन है , पर ु पृ ी का आकार एक गोला ( ोब)
होने के कारण मानिच , ोब की अपे ा अिधक सुिवधाजनक होते ह। िवशे षतः स ू ण िव का िच ण तथा
िव के भूगोल का अ यन करने म यह अिधक ितिनिध करता है।
