SECTION – A
(Reading Skills)

1. Read the following passage carefully :
Among the natural resources which can be called upon in national plans for
development, possibly the most important is human labour. Without a productive
labour force, including effective leadership and intelligent middle management, no
amount of foreign assistance or of natural wealth can ensure successful development
and modernisation.
In this, one essential factor is usually overlooked or ignored. The forgotten factor is the
role of women. Development will be handicapped as long as women remain second-
class citizens, uneducated, without any voice in family or community decisions, without
legal or economic status, married when they are still practically children and thenceforth
producing one baby after another, often only to see half of them die before they are of
school age. We can enhance development by giving women the opportunity to develop
themselves.

The principle seems established that an educated mother has healthier and more
intelligent children and that this is related to the fact that she has fewer children. The
tendency of educated upper-class mothers to have fewer children operates even without
access to contraceptive services as was noted in Western Europe before the turn of
the century.
Until women are given the opportunity to become ‘separate and complete human
beings’, their own potential for productivity is wasted. Until they become ‘separate
and complete human beings’, they will perpetuate in their children those
characteristics which are least conducive to development. Viewed in this light,
the education of women and the improvement of their social and economic status
become more than the focus of an emotional crusade for human rights. They
must be acknowledged as a prerequisite to national development and given a
high priority for strictly practical reasons.

Of all the known high fibre foods and herbs, psyllium husk is undoubtedly a hero.
The psyllium husk which is commonly known as ‘isabgol’ is sourced from the
outer covering of the seeds of the plant-Plantago ovata, Isabgol refers to the
shape of the seed.
Psyllium has several characteristics that boost digestive health. Psyllium is a
soluble fibre that helps relieve constipation through its bulk - forming power.
When this husk comes in contact with water, it swells and forms a gelatin - like
mass that pushes along waste through the intestines. “It is this quality that
makes psyllium effective in treating constipation as well as diarrhoea. Therefore,
it is especially useful for geriatric patients and also to treat those with the
irritable bowel syndrome, piles and other intestinal problems,” says Dr. Kamala
Krishnaswamy, Food Scientist and former Director, National Institute of Nutrition,
Hyderabad. Psyllium is heart – healthy too as the fibre content helps lower total
cholesterol and bad cholesterol. This is due to the balance of soluble and insoluble
fibre and the presence of galacturonic acid. (177 words)
