A. Read the following passage and answer the questions set below it:
Antonio, a merchant of Venice, had to borrow a lot of money from his enemy, Shylock. For it, he
signed an unusual kind of bond. What was unusual about the bond? It gave Shylock the right to cut a
pound of flesh off Antonio's chest if he was not able to pay back his debt in time.
Antonio borrowed the money to enable Bassanio, a friend of his, to go to Belmont to marry a lovely
and intelligent lady called Portia. Bassanio gets happily married to Portia and his companion Gratiano
gets married to Portia's maid Nerissa.

But their happiness was soon followed by sorrow. They had news from Venice. Antonio's life was in
danger for Antonio was not able to pay his debt and was therefore in jail and Shylock wanted his
pound of flesh. Bassanio and Gratiano hurriedly said goodbye to their wives and left for Venice with a
lot of money.

But the wives soon followed their husbands to Venice, unknown to them. Portia, who knew a lot about
the law, knew how to save Antonio from Shylock. Pretending to be a judge, she heard the case and
finally allowed Shylock to take exactly a pound of flesh but without bleeding Antonio. Shylock was
caught in his own trap.

Sugar is a substance which is necessary in some form or the other in everyone’s diet. It is obtained
from almost all fruits and vegetables, but some plants are specially rich in sugar. Fruits like oranges
also have sugar.

The sugarcane is a large grass that grows to a height of fifteen or twenty feet and has a stem about an
inch and a half in diameter. Among the areas chiefly devoted to the cultivation of this plant are India,
West Indies and Africa.

Elaborate machinery is now used to extract the juice from the canes. This process and those of
boiling, clarifying and filtering drive out all unwanted matter and leave dry sugar crystals behind. This
is white sugar used in tea and coffee.
The rejected liquid matter is known as molasses from which rum, a strong form of alcohol, is made. In
Indian villages, the coarse brown sugar is used (gur or jaggery) in sweets because pure white sugar is
too expensive for the poor people. In Europe much sugar is produced from the vegetable called beet.
