(Questions 1 - 5) : Read the following passage carefully.

A few moments later we all lifted our eyes in awe as a spectacular array of South African jets,

helicopters and troop carriers roared in perfect formation over the Union Buildings. It was not

m
only a display of pinpoint precision and military loyalty to democracy, to a new government that

.co
had been freely and fairly elected. Only moments before, the highest generals of the South

by, saluated me and pledged their loyalty. I was not unmindful of the fact that not so many years

ag
before they would not have saluted but arrested me. Finally a chevron of Impala jets left a

smoke trail of the black, red, green, blue and gold of the new South African flag.

The day was symbolised for me by the playing of out two national anthems, and the vision of

white singing 'Nkosi Sikelel-Afrika' and blacks singing 'Die Stem', the old anthem of the Republic.

Although that day neither group knew the lyrics of the anthem they once despised, they would

soon know the words by heart.

On the day of the inauguration, I was overwhelmed with a sense of history.

What is the boy now, who has lost his ball,

What, what is he to do? I saw it go

Merrily bouncing, down the street, and then

Merrily over — there it is in the water!

No use to say ‘O there are other balls’:

An ultimate shaking grief fixes the boy

As he stands rigid, trembling, staring down

All his young days into the harbour where

His ball went. I would not intrude on him;

A dime, another ball, is worthless (The ball poem)
