The Ganga is a holy river. It is the largest river in India. It is

more than 30 crores of people live on its plains. They use the river water to

drink, wash clothes, bathe, to grow crops and to dispose of the half burnt

dead bodies. Its water used to be clean and pure and millions of sea

creatures lived in it.

But times have changed ! Until recently the river could clean itself because

the amount of water the river carried was much greater than the waste it

had to carry. But today sewage and waste from industries are choking our

rivers. They have become sources of diseases and death. People dump

waste and garbage into the rivers. Pilgrims add to this problem. Varanasi

alone gets over 70,000 pilgrims a day ! Chemical waste from factories make

the river water dangerous.

The Government of India and the State Governments have taken up the

task of cleaning the Ganga. It is called the ‘‘Ganga cleaning project’’. The

main features of the project are,

— Sewage water is not let into the river.

— To prevent pollutants going into the river.

— Trees are planted along the river.

— Sulabh Sauchalayas are built along the ghats.
