Sample Question Paper (2025-26)
Class:- 12th (10+2)
Subject:- English Special
Time:3 Hrs Marks:-80
General Instructions
● The question paper Contains two sections-Reading Skill and Writing Skill
● Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part
Section-A
Reading Skill
1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:- 2x10=20
Passage
1. Polythene shopping bags and wrappers are potential1 threat to urban2 environment. Once
you have discarded3 them after use, you do not lose your link with them. They return to
you in a variety of ways, though you do not realise it. For example, they choke4 your
drains and provide breeding facilities to deadly5 germs.
2. A recent study has shown that about 250 tonnes of plastic wastes come out of various
colonies of major cities alone every day. This disrupts6 the sewer system, the essential
arteries7 of city life. These plastic wastes choke the land mass and clog the pores of the
wetlands8.
3. Unfortunately, even the villages and small towns are not free from this danger. Millions of
people returning to their hometowns every day carry their shopping in colourful bags. This
pleases their family and children, who after preserving them for a time, dispose them in
wells, rivers, tanks and drains. Many throw them off into the fields. They do it with a sense
of pride, to show off. When their neighbours see that their men from the cities regularly
bring them those good things of life, they are impressed.
4. In Delhi, the worst offenders are the upper income groups of the so-called posh colonies.
Though educated, the residents of these affluent areas are unaware of the damage done by
the plastic bags. Nearly a million children in Delhi schools carry their lunch boxes in
plastic bags. They callously9 throw them away and cause unhealthy environment.

Page 2

5. As it is convenient for mothers to wrap the food in plastic it is difficult to persuade them
against doing this. According to the drill master of a school in R.K. Puram, it becomes a
drill to clean the field after the children leave. When the midday meal scheme is fully
implemented, it must be seen that no plastic wrappers are used.
6. As these wrappers are light in weight, they are born aloft by the wind causing visual

shocks. Unlike cotton or paper bags they remain undissolved in the mud and stop the rain-
water from seeping deep into the earth. This affects the natural growth of greenery.

Rights and duties are two sides of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other. Duties
without rights are mere slavery. Similarly, rights without duties amount to lawlessness. In any
civilized society, rights and duties must go side by side. But in today's world everybody talks
much about his rights. There is a great hue and cry if our rights are infringed1. But nobody seems
to bother much about his duties. That is why there is a great unrest in our present-day life.
Actually duties come first and rights afterwards. Many a time, one man's right is another man's
duty and vice-versa2. For example every man has the right to have an undisturbed sleep. So it
becomes the duty of his neighbour not to tune his radio at two high a pitch. If we want to enjoy
our rights, we should act in such a way that the rights of others are not trespassed3. It can happen
only if we take due account of our duties also. In short rights and duties are complimentary 4
things and not contradictory5.

1. Good health is the soundness of body, mind and soul. It is that condition in which the body
and the mind duly discharge their functions. Good health helps one to be creative and to
work for the welfare of the society. To be healthy, one has to be, therefore, free from
disease: or if he suffers from any, he needs treatment not only for that particular disease,
but also for the whole body, mind and soul. In other words, a doctor has to have a healthy
approach towards patients.
2. In these days of specialization, doctors cure a patient only for his immediate disease,
treating it in isolation. Such an approach goes against the old aphorism¹ that 'Prevention is
better than cure'. Dr. Hedge provides an insight into the overall causes of simple and
serious diseases and describes the methods of preventing them without having to take
medicine, like exercising, self-control on food consumption, smoking and intake of
alcoholic drinks. He also advocates regular yoga exercise and meditation to keep fit, but at
the same time warns against over- indulgence2.

Page 6

3. Hedge stresses the importance of laughter because laughter induces secretion of good
catecholamines3 which are hormones produced by adrenal4 gland; they can be both
beneficial and harmful. They are harmful when a person is angry, but beneficial if he
laughs. "For healthy living, laughter proves to be a great boon," Hedge says.
4. In these days of hectic4 life, full of stress, strain and emotions, everyone needs to lead a
relaxed life. The best form of relaxation, according to Hedge, is sound sleep. "Restful
sleep at night will recharge our batteries for the following day's fruitful endeavour."

1. Child labour has been sought in the country since the middle of the 19th century when
factories first made an appearance. Since children in most industries provide the same
productivity1 as adults, and in several cases even more, but at a far lower cost, they were
soon recognised as a means to lower overheads2 and increase profits. However, as the
industrial revolution progressed, gradually the people became aware of the torture they
were subjecting their children to both mentally and physically. But even as the country
continued to progress at various levels, it lagged behind in terms of the wherewithal 3 and
prosperity needed to take care of the new social relations which had sprung up with result
that wages for workers were abysmally4 low and it was difficult for a family to survive on
one man's wages. This is when human resources became the only true assets families had
and every pair of working hands, including those of children, was engaged in earning
livelihood.
2. And once child labour had made an appearance in the job market, employers soon began
to prefer working children to working adults, for not only could they give the same output
as an adult worker at a much lower cost but were also more nimble5 and agile6 and more
amenable7 to discipline. The employers prefer children because their high profits depend
largely on child labour.
8
3. It is indeed lamentables that poverty even compels parents and guardians to barter their
children for money. A number of young children are sold by their parents or pledged as
bonded labour.
