Electric current is expressed by the amount of charge flowing through a particular area
in unit time. In other words, it is the rate of flow of electric charges. Conventionally, in an
electric circuit the direction of electric current is taken as opposite to the direction of the
flow of electrons, which are negative charges.
It is observed that the ammeter reading decreases to one-half when the length of the wire
is doubled. The ammeter reading is increased when a thicker wire of the same material and
of the same length is used in a circuit. A change in the ammeter reading is observed when
a wire of different material of the same length and the same area of cross-section is used

Current through a resistor is in phase with the ac voltage. But this is not so in the case of
a inductor, a capacitor or a combination of these circuit elements. In order to show phase
relationship between voltage and current in an ac circuit, we use the notion of phasors. The
analysis of an ac circuit is facilitated by the use of a phasor diagram. A phasor is a vector
which rotates about the origin with angular speed omega. The vertical components of
phasors V and I represent the sinusoidally varying quantities v and i. The magnitude of
phasors V and I represent the amplitude or the peak values vm and im of these oscillating
quantities. The projection of voltage and current phasors on vertical axis i.e., vm sin wt and
im sin wt, respectively represent the value of voltage and current at that instant.
(i) The peak value of 220 V a.c. is:
(a) 220 V (b) 311 V (c) 110 V (d) 440 V
(ii) The power dissipated in a pure inductive circuit is:
(a) I2 R (b) IR (c) Zero (d) None of these
(iii) An ac source is connected to a resistor. The phase difference between applied voltage
and the current flowing through it is:
(a) 0° (b) 45° (c) 90° (d) 180°
(iv) Draw the variation of capacitive reactance (XC) with frequency (f).
