Geology syllabus for STD XIth science
UNIT 1 EARTH (periods) –20
1) Introduction to the science of Geology
Definition, Importance and various branches of Geology. Relation to other sciences,
Interdisciplinary nature of the subject.
2) Earth as planet
Important parts of earth--- Atmosphere, Lithosphere and Hydrosphere. Age of the earth----
Brief mention of method, Origin of earth—theories of origin of earth, nebular hypothesis,
Tidal hypothesis and gas dust hypothesis. Evolution of continents and oceans.
3) Internal structure of earth
Description of crust, mantle, and core with respect to their chemical composition, rock types,
depth and thickness, brief mention of direct and indirect evidence.

Features of glacial erosion---striations, glacial trough, hanging valleys, glacial transport,
movement of glaciers, glacial deposits, morphological notes, glaciations in past, ice ages and their
causes.
