Once late at night, Reagan Arolkar was returning home riding his carriage. On his way, he had
to pass a solitary place. Suddenly, a saree-clad woman who had covered her head stopped
him. She requested him for a lift as the bag she was carrying was heavy.

No sooner had she sat down than he saw that under her veil, she had a black moustache.
Reagan Arolkar felt a bit panicky, however, he had enough presence of mind to think of how
to get rid of his dangerous companion.

Suddenly, he let his handkerchief fall down as if by accident. He then requested the woman
to be kind enough and pick it up as he could not get down and leave his untrained horses. The
lady complied with his request and got down from the carriage. At that very moment, he
whipped his horses forward at a gallop and charged away. When he reached home, he found
in the bag which was left behind a dagger, a knife and a number of pistols.

Q2 Read the following passage and complete the flow chart given below. Write your answers
with their corresponding numbers. (Do not draw the diagram.) (4)
Turtles, tortoise and terrapins all belong to a group of four legged reptiles that have hard outer
shells, scaly skin and horny beaks. Most people use these three names interchangeably,
however scientists make a distinction between the three. A turtle is a sea reptile, a tortoise is a

land reptile and a terrapin is a fresh water reptile.
It is correct to call all three as turtles. They all breathe air through lungs and have shells that are
made up of a bony box covered with horny plates or with soft skin. Through the openings between

the shell and the underbelly, the turtle can thrust out the neck, tail and legs. Turtles have well
developed senses of sight, taste and touch, but their hearing is quite poor. Most turtles eat all
kinds of food. A turtle can be a friendly pet.

1) - Mahendra was posted in lonely, desolate places, sometimes even without electricity.
- Iswaran his devoted servant, accompanied him wherever he was transferred.
- Iswaran had wonderful art of cooking and narrating stories.
- Every night, after dinner, he would narrate an interesting event or story to Mahendra.
-His style of narrating was interesting, full of suspense and dramatic.
- His gestures and hand movements added colour to his narration.

2) The child is innocent and full of enthusiasm. Like any child, he is captivated by simple things in
nature like the raining petals, the dragonflies, the cooing dove, etc. The display in the fair fascinates
him but he does not insist that his parents should buy them for him. He gets easily distracted by the
new things that he sees on the way and follows his parents obediently. However, he cannot resist his
temptation of a ride on the roundabout, but when he turns back, he realizes that he is lost and feels
insecure and anxious. He is inconsolable and everything else is of little value for him in the absence
of his parents.

3) -The leaden heart represents the heat of the happy Prince' & the dead bird is the swallow in the
story. The happy Prince gave away all the jewels he was adorned with for the poor and needy. The
little bird helped him in his mission & served selflessly till death.
-They are precious as they symbolise heavenly virtues like goodness, kindness, love, sympathy,
selfless service and sacrifice to make others happy.
