9. The candidate is expected to write all the six combinations of Rishabha and gandhara, giving the 2
complete name of each swarasthana along with their mnemonics.

It is expected from the candidate to write the names of all the six chakras along with their serial
numbers, in their correct order.

10. The student is expected to briefly mention in one line what is varnam, classifying Tana varnam and 2
Pada varnam as its varieties. Differentiate between the two varieties of varnam on the basis of its
structure, tempo in which it is performed, the occasion when it is performed (any two).

It is expected from the student to write any two important features of a Pada varnam based on the
structure, tempo, the occasion in which it is performed (any two features)

11. The candidate is expected to write the names of the four additional swarasthanas along with the 2
names of the four existing swarasthanas (from the dwadasa swarasthanas) to which they
correspond.

It is expected from the student to write the total number of melas which use any one or more of the
four additional swarasthanas. They have to write the names of any four such melas along with their
correct serial number in the 72 Melakarta scheme.

12. The student is expected to write the important features of the raga stating whether it is a janya or 2
janaka raga, derived from which mela, arohana and avarohana, variety of swaras taken, upanga or
bhashanga, vadi swara, samvadi swara, jeeva swaras, nyasa swaras, special prayogas,
murcchanakaraka raga, its name in Mutthuswami Deekshitar’s school of music, similar raga in
Hindustani music (any four)

The candidate is expected to write any four popular compositions based on the raga Sriranjani,
mentioning the musical form, its tala and the name of the composer. They are also expected to write
at least eight important phrases or the prominent sancharas of the raga.
13. It is expected from the student to write the reason associated with chakra names and their

corresponding serial numbers. They have to briefly explain why the name of the first mela is Indu
and the second mela is Netra etc.
OR
The candidate has to first briefly mention the reason for adding the prefix to the mela names. Then
they have to write the names of any four melas with such prefixes, clearly indicating their serial
number in the 72 melakarta scheme.

14. The candidate is expected to write details about Papanasam Sivan’s date & place of birth, 6
parentage, education, musical style, guru(s), disciples, achievements and contribution to music.

i) The student is expected to write all the three methods of showing 2 aksharakalas i.e., capital letter
of the swara, small letter of the swara and small letter followed by a comma.

It is expected from the candidate to notate any geetam prescribed in the course with correct swaras
and the corresponding sahitya, indicating the tala avarta and the different angas of the tala; sthayi of
the swaras, duration of the swaras with appropriate tools such as comma, semi-colon etc.

16. The candidate is expected to briefly mention details about Koteeswara Iyer’s early life with main 6
focus on his contribution to music, especially- Kanda Ganamudam.
