SECTION A (20 Marks)

Question 1

As a student of Fashion Designing, you are asked to design a garment for a
teenage girl for her first performance on stage as a ‘hip-hop’ dancer. So, keeping
in mind this special occasion and the recent trend in styles and design, write
your plan of action for the following:

(a) Write the name of the garment and any two reasons for your choice. [2]

(b) For planning the above garment, give your choice for the following [5]
details:

(i) Name of the fabric

(ii) Colours and patterns of the fabric

(iii) Required quantity of the fabric

(iv) Supplementary materials required and their quantity

(v) Approximate cost of the finished garment.

(c) With the help of appropriate diagrams, mention the details of garment [9]
construction that include:
(i) Preparation of the fabric for cutting

(ii) Drafting and layout

(iii) Cutting, stitching and finishing.

(d) Describe the kind of decorative design you would adopt to make the outfit [4]
more attractive. Give specific details on:
(i) The design type
(ii) The design placement
(iii) The colour combinations
(iv) Suitable embroidery stitches.

Question 2

As a fashion designing student, you need to have the complete knowledge of the
tools and equipment used for designing clothing. With reference to this explain:

(a) The role and contribution of sewing tools and equipment [10]

(b) Factors to be considered while purchasing the sewing equipment and [10]
tools.

Question 3
The sewing machine is considered to be one of the most important tools in
garment construction. In this context:

(a) List out the various parts of a Sewing Machine with the help of a diagram. [10]

(b) Write the differences between a fashion maker sewing machine and an [10]
ordinary pedal sewing machine.

Question 4

In sewing and fashion design, a pattern is the template from which the parts of
a garment are traced onto fabric before being cut out and assembled.
With reference to this, explain:

(a) The significance of commercial patterns. [10]

(b) The differences between commercial patterns and drafted patterns. [10]

Question 5

The success of the garment depends on its measurements and fit. A well fitted
garment has optimum ease and follows the general silhouette.
Keeping this in mind, explain the following:

(a) Write any five common figure problems and explain the different types [10]
of clothing they should wear and avoid.

(b) Explain the steps involved in making a dress. [10]

Question 6

For dress designing, it is necessary to have knowledge of various design details
which can be applied on the dress. In this context, define the following terms
and write short notes with the help of diagrams:

(a) Tucks [10]

(b) Gathers [5]

(c) Darts [5]

The traditional embroidery of India includes various embroidery styles and
stitches used for garment embellishment. Keeping this in mind, explain the
following:

(a) Kashida of Kashmir [5]

(b) Phulkari of Punjab [5]

(c) Any five common embroidery stitches used for garment embellishment. [10]
