SECTION-A (Literature)

1. Answer the following questions: 5x2=10

(a) Why did the woman stop watching the boy once she was inside the room?
(b) Of what use were the nuts to the peasants in Klimov? Did they know what
might have happened if the nuts are taken?
(c) What were the difficulties the diamond maker had to undergo in following
his ambition?
(d) What happened to Albert Edward in the course of ten years?
(e) Write any two evidences that Lessing found about the hunger of books in
Zimbabwe.

2. Answer any one of the following questions in about 150 words:

(a) How is Mrs Luella Bates Washington Jones’ remarks very different from
her actions? How do these reflect upon her character?

3. Read the lines from the poem and answer any two questions that follow:

Friends’.

SECTION –B (Reading)

7. The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that worning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling with this a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

(i) Based on your reading of the poem, complete the following in the space

“Rule”, I said, are necessary things, but there are rules and rules. Some are hard
and fast rules like the rule of the road, which cannot be broken without danger to life
and limb. But some are only rules for your guidance, which you can apply or wink at,
as common sense dictates. Like that rule about dogs. They are meant to be observed in
the spirit, not in the letter-for the comfort and not for the discomfort of the passenger.
You have kept the rule and broken the spirit. You want to mix your rules with a little
goodwill and good temper.
Based on your reading of the passage answer the following questions:

9. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow:
In my opinion, the beauty and efficacy of Satyagraha are so great, and the
doctrine so simple, that it can be preached even to children. It was preached by
me to thousands of men, women and children with excellent results.
The spirit of non-violence necessarily leads to humility. Non-violence
means reliance on God, ‘the Rock of Ages’. If we seek His aid, we must
approach him with a humble and contrite heart. Even as the mango tree, which
droops as it bears fruits. Its grandeur lies in its majestic lowliness.
Non –cooperation is not a movement to brag, bluster or bluff. It is a test to
our sincerity. It requires solid and silent self-sacrifice. It challenges our honesty
and our capacity for national work. It is a movement that aims at translating ideas
into action. And the more we do, the more we find that much more must be done.
And this thought of our imperfection must make us humble.

12. Your parents have gone on a vacation outside the State.
Write a letter to your parents describing how you celebrated/spent your
birthday with your siblings in their absence. 6

13. You have just completed your final examination and is preparing to enter
college. Your father is worried about the carrier path you have in mind,
whereas, you are certain about what you want to do. The two of you debate
the pros and cons of your decision. Write a dialogue in Direct Speech.
