43. Many words in the dictionary have nearly disappeared from

spoken language. Some words that were once used to name

certain things disappeared as new inventions replaced the old.

Other words have disappeared because people say things

differently today. These changes take place gradually as, over the

years, the new word becomes popular and the old word is used

less and less until it finally disappears.

When automobiles were invented, certain vehicles of

transportation began to disappear. The words surrey, gig,

buckboard, brougham, carriage, buggy, shay, calash, chaise,

cariole and tilburg are rarely heard today. These words were once

used to name different kinds of horse-drawn vehicles. You may

encounter these words when reading, but you seldom hear them

today.
