(a) 738 × 103
(b) 854 × 102
(c) 258 × 1008
(d) 1005 × 168

= 73800 + 2214
= 76014

(b) 854 x 102 = 854 x (100+2)
= 854 x 100 + 854 x 2 (Distributive property)
= 85400 + 1708 87108

(c) 258 x 1008 = 258 x (1000 + 8)
= 258 x 1000 + 258 x 8 (Distributive property)
= 258000 + 2064 = 260064

Q5 A taxi driver lled his car petrol tank with 40 litres of petrol on Monday. The next
day, he lled the tank with 50 litres of petrol. If the petrol costs 44 per litre, how much
did he spend in all on petrol?

Answer. Quantity of petrol lled on Monday = 40 l
Quantity of petrol lled on Tuesday = 50 l
Total quantity lled = (40 + 50) l

Page 5 of 9 Aglasem Schools

Page 7

Book: Mathematics NCERT Solutions | Chapter - 2 Maths

Cost of petrol (per l) = Rs 44
Total money spent = 44 x (40 + 50) = 44 x 90 = Rs 3960

Q6 A vendor supplies 32 litres of milk to a hotel in the morning and 68 litres of milk in
the evening. If the milk costs 45 per litre, how much money is due to the vendor per day?

Answer. Quantity of milk supplied in the morning = 32 l
Quantity of milk supplied in the evening = 68 l
Total of milk per litre = (32 + 68) l
Cost of milk per litre = Rs 15
Total cost per day = 15 x (32 + 68)
= 15 x 100 = Rs 1500

Q7 Match the following:

Answer. (i) 425 x 136 = 425 x (6 + 30 + 100) [Distributivity of multiplication over addition]
Hence, (c)
(ii) 2 x 49 x 50 = 2 x 50 x 49 [Commutative under multiplication]
Hence, (a)
(iii) 80 + 2005 + 20 = 80 + 20 + 2005 [Commutative under addition]
Hence, (b)

Q2 If the product of two whole numbers is zero, can we say that one or both of them will
be zero? Justify through examples.

Answer. If the product of 2 whole numbers is zero, then one of them is denitely zero.
For example, 0 x 2 = 0 and 17 x 0 = 0
If the product of 2 whole numbers is zero, then both of them may be zero.
0x0=0
However, 2 x 3 = 6
(Since numbers to be multiplied are not equal to zero, the result of the product will
also be non-zero.)

Page : 43 , Block Name : Exercise 2.3

Q3 If the product of two whole numbers is 1, can we say that one or both of them will be
1? Justify through examples.

Answer. If the product of 2 numbers is 1, then both the numbers have to equal to 1.
For example, 1 x 1 = 1
However, 1 x 6 = 6
Clearly, the product of two whole numbers will be 1 in the situation when both
numbers to be multiplied are 1.

Q4 Find using distributive property :
(a) 728 × 101
(b) 5437 × 1001
(c) 824 × 25 (d) 4275 × 125
(e) 504 × 35

Answer. (a) 728 x 101= 728 x (100 + 1)
= 728 x 100 + 728 x 1
= 72800 + 728 = 73528

(b) 5437 x 1001 = 5437 x (1000 + 1)
= 5437 x 1000 + 5437 x 1
= 5437000 + 5437 = 5442437

(c) 824 x 25 (800 + 24) x 25
= (800 + 25 - 1) 25
-800x25+25 x 25-1x25
= 20000 + 625 - 25
= 20000 + 600 = 20600

(d) 4275 x 125 = (4000 + 200 + 100 - 25) x 125
= 4000 x 125 + 200 x 125 + 100 x 125 - 25 x 125
= 500000 + 25000 + 12500 - 3125
= 534375

(e) 504 x 35 = (500 + 4) x 35
= 500 x 35 +4 x 35
= 17500 + 140 = 17640

Q5 Study the pattern :
1 × 8 + 1 = 9 1234 × 8 + 4 = 9876
12 × 8 + 2 = 98 12345 × 8 + 5 = 98765
123 × 8 + 3 = 987
Write the next two steps. Can you say how the pattern works?
(Hint: 12345 = 11111 + 1111 + 111 + 11 + 1).

Answer. 123456 x 8 + 6 = 987648 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876536 + 7 = 9876543

Page 8 of 9 Aglasem Schools

Page 10

Book: Mathematics NCERT Solutions | Chapter - 2 Maths

Yes, the pattern works.
As 123456 = 111111 + 11111 + 1111 + 111 + 11 + 1,
123456 x 8 = (111111 + 11111 + 1111 + 111 + 11 + 1) x 8
= 111111 x 8 + 11111 x 8 + 1111 x 8 + 111 x 8 + 11 x 8 + 1 x 8
= 888888 + 88888 + 8888 + 888 + 88 + 8 = 987648
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987648 + 6 = 987648
