SECTION: A (READING SKILLS) 20 MARKS

1.Read the passage given below carefully:

1.The novel coronavirus has given rise to a global pandemic that has destabilized most institutional
settings. While we live in times when humankind possesses the most advanced science and
technology, a virus invisible to the naked eye has massively disrupted our lives, economies,
healthcare, and education systems worldwide.
Given the coronavirus’s current situation, some households have also had time to introspect on
gender roles and stereotypes. For instance, women are expected to carry out household chores like
cooking, cleaning, and looking after the family. With men sharing household chores responsibilities
during the lockdown period, it gives hope that they will realize the burden that women have been
bearing and will continue sharing such responsibilities.
2. This tough period also gave people some time to reflect on the importance of keeping themselves
fit. With sufficient time in hand, people started investing their time learning new ways to exercise.
Those who never exercised before, giving excuses of busy lives, too developed some new habits of
Yoga, Pranayam and exercises during the lockdown period.
These new habits and people’s increased focus on their health, wellness and immunity will surely
change the way we lead our lives even in future.
3. The nature too healed itself during the lockdown period. Restricted human movement led to
better air quality, cleaner water bodies and joyful wildlife movements. The human beings, we hope,
reflected during this time, how some of their unconscious activities cause disruption in nature and
worked out ways to adopt environmental-friendly options for their activities in future.
This situation also affected the education sector to a great extent. It has forced us to shift from
offline to online mode of teaching-learning process, almost immediately without prior preparation.
Is it giving us a peek into the reality ahead?
Technology-enabled teaching is definitely the future we are looking towards, but it is important to

identify key challenges for students and teachers in the current scenario. Once identified, academic
leadership and the government can address these through innovations in the focused areas to
minimise the effect of pandemic on the education of the students.
4. The current scenario has also affected our economies to the extent wherein many businessmen
had to bear heavy losses in their businesses. The governments and individuals need to take actions
to mitigate risk and minimize transmission while maintaining social and economic activities.

However, relaxed control measures, declining risk perception and the understandable desire
to return to normalcy have led to reduced protective behaviours and more social and workplace
interactions, often in confined, close-contact settings, where the virus spreads really fast.

5. It is our responsibility that we take all necessary precautions through mask-wearing, physical
distancing, hand hygiene as part of daily life. It is highly important to make these new behaviours
part of our everyday habits. Travelling to new places, casual café visits with a large bunch of
friends, spending our weekends in shopping, window-shopping and casual strolls, large gatherings
in birthday parties and other celebrations will require some modifications and patience to fit into
“New Normal” keeping all the safety norms in mind.
We are sure that regular communication from authorities, improved understanding of
individual responsibility and, subsequently, a greater willingness to adopt infection prevention
practices can be a stepping stone to a “new future”.

2. Read the following passage carefully:
The story of Joanne Kathleen Rowling’s near magical rise to fame is almost as well known
as the characters she creates.
Rowling was constantly writing and telling stories to her younger sister Dianne. “The first
story I ever wrote down was about a rabbit called Rabbit.” Rowling said in an interview. “He got
the measles and was visited by his friends including a giant bee called Miss Bee. And ever since
Rabbit and Miss Bee, I have always wanted to be a writer, though I rarely told anyone so.
However, my parents, both of whom come from impoverished backgrounds and neither of
whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal
quirk that would never pay a mortgage or secure a pension.
A writer from the age of six, with two unpublished novels in the drawer, she was stuck on a
train when Harry walked into her mind fully formed. She spent the next five years constructing the
plots of seven books, one for every year of his secondary school life.
Rowling says she started writing the first book, Harry’ Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in
Portugal, where she was teaching English.
At first nobody wanted to publish Harry Potter. She was told that plot was too complex.
Refusing to compromise, she found a publisher.
In 1997 Rowling received her first royalty cheque. By book three, she had sky rocketed to
the top of the publishing world. A row of zeroes appeared on the author’s bank balance and her life
was turned upside down. Day and night she had journalists knocking on the unanswered door of her
flat.
Rowling’s quality control has become legendary, as her obsession with accuracy. She’s
thrilled with Stephen Fry’s taped version of the books and outraged that an Italian dust jacket
showed Harry minus his glasses. “Don’t they understand that the glasses are the clue to his
vulnerability.”

(i) Professor’s aim was to get a commission or to be an army officer. By 2
intelligent reading, he meant thorough and deep reading.

teeth properly.

the brook.

William Shakespeare, the prince of poets and king of dramatists, has truly delineated
every hue and colour of man’s personality in the poem, “The Seven Ages”. The poet
compares human life to a play or a drama in which the world is the stage and human

beings are the cast of actors who have to perform different roles as they make their
journey through life-from birth to death. In this journey of life, man begins as an infant
helpless and crying-in the arms of a nurse. As he grows up, he plays the role of a school
going child, then a young, ardent lover and a proud soldier. As years pass, he matures in

judgement and becomes sober. Then old age comes and man is without teeth and energy.

So that it can be called man’s second childishness. Thus, ends the eventful history of life
and man departs from the stage of life after living the seven colours of his life.

The prison is meant for reformation. That is why, it is often called ‘Sudhar Ghar’. Here
the prisoners should be treated in such a way that they realize their mistakes and reform
themselves. They should not be treated like animals as was done in the prison which the
convict calls ‘Hell’. The convict had to steal out of compulsion. When he was in the
prison, he was given a number. He was fed on filth. He had to sleep on boards. He was
beaten mercilessly. They turned him into a hardened criminal. He lost faith in humanity.
He began to hate everybody. When he escaped from the prison, he was not a reformed
person. He again stole-this time the silver candlesticks of a really noble person, the
Bishop.If he was changed man towards the end, it was due to the Bishop’s extremely
kind and humane treatment. The Bishop changed his heart by his kindness and
generosity.
