Rahul conducted an experiment to understand the process of photosynthesis. He placed a potted plant
in a dark room for 48 hours to ensure that the plant uses up all the stored starch. Then, he covered
one of the leaves of the plant with a black paper and placed the plant in sunlight for 6 hours. After
this, he performed a starch test on the leaf. The results showed that the part of the leaf covered with
black paper did not turn blue-black, while the uncovered part turned blue-black.

Based on this experiment, answer the following questions:

a)Why was the potted plant kept in the dark for 48 hours before the experiment?

b)Explain why the part of the leaf covered with black paper did not turn blue-black.
