Answer. The author had a high opinion about Mr Gessler as a bootmaker. He knew that Mr Gessler
made only what was ordered, and the boots that he made never failed to t. The author felt that to
make such boots as Mr Gessler did seemed mysterious and wonderful.

Answer. The author visited the shop so infrequently because the boots made by Mr Gessler lasted
for a long time.

Q3 What was the effect on Mr Gessler of the author’s remark about a certain pair of boots?

Answer. When the author remarked that a certain pair of boots he had got earlier creaked, Mr
Gessler looked at him for a time without replying, as if expecting him to withdraw or qualify the
statement. Then, he said that the shoes should not have creaked. He then asked the author to send
the boots back, and if he could do nothing of them, he would take them off his bill.

Q4 What was Mr Gessler’s complaint against “big rms”?

Answer. Mr Gessler’s complaint against big rms was that they got customers only because of
advertising, and not because of any quality work. Mr Gessler, who loved his job and who used to
make good quality boots, had very little work because people preferred the big rms.

Q5 Why did the author order so many pairs of boots? Did he really need them?

Answer. The author knew that Mr Gessler made good quality boots. Every single pair of boots was
good enough to last a long time. He came to know from Mr Gessler himself that in spite of his love
for his job he could not get much work. This was because people preferred buying boots from big
rms. Seeing his hardship and struggle, the author decided to order many pairs of boots even

though he really did not really need them.

Q1 Do you think Mr Gessler was a failure as a bootmaker or as a competitive businessman?

Answer. Mr Gessler was successful as a bootmaker because his customers were immensely satis ed
with the boot he made.
This perfectly t them and lasted long. Yes, he was a failure as a competitive businessman.
He didn’t have money like the big rms so couldn’t invest on advertisements. He lost his business
to them. He took time in delivering the boots because he made them alone. He lost his customers
because of the delay in delivery.
He worked hard, striving for long hours. Whatever, he earned went on paying the rent for his shop
and for buying leathers. He spent days of great penury.

Q2 What is the signi cance of the title? To whom or to what does it refer?

Answer. The title refers to the great quality boots Mr Gessler made. It is an ideal title for the
lesson. It refers to the business practices followed these days where no one cares about quality.
For Mr Gessler, quality was of optimum signi cance. He worked for long hours, didn’t allow
anyone else to touch his boots. He lost on business, was spending days in poverty still the man
didn’t compromise on quality.

Q3 (i) Notice the way Mr Gessler speaks English. His English is in uenced by his mother tongue.
He speaks English with an accent.
(ii) When Mr Gessler speaks, p,t,k, sound like b,d,g. Can you say these words as Mr Gessler would

Answer. (1) Yes, they prefer buying their provisions loose from the smaller stores near their house.

(2) They buy footwear for daily purpose from local shops. For of ce and part purpose they prefer
buying it from branded shops. They don't like spending too much on their regular footwear. So,
they buy it from local shops. For of ce and party they want to look good and want the footwear to
last long and comfortable. So, they are ne spending on it.
(3) They do the both. At times they buy readymade clothes and at times get them stitched from the
tailor. They nd it easy to buy readymade clothes. They get the latest fashion and it saves time as
well.

Suddenly our neighbour began calling. He told us that something was burning. My uncle rushed to
the kitchen. He found the vegetables burning. He thought to save it. For this he put some oil in the
vegetables. But it happened to be machine oil. It spoiled all the vegetables

line immediately before it.)
(ii) “Trees are for apples to grow on, or pears.” Do you agree that one purpose of a tree is to have
fruit on it? Or do you think this line is humorous?

Answer. (i)In summer we enjoy the cool shade that trees provide us. But in winter we don't need
that shade because we like to enjoy the warmth of the sun standing away from the trees or their
shade.
(ii) Yes, I do agree that one purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it. I don't think this line of the
poem is humorous.
