Giving feedback to students is a powerful tool in helping them be successful, especially for
low achievers. Teachers should not only confuse good feedback as gold stars and grades since
these types of rewards only create students who find ways to receive them and don’t bother to
learn the content (Black 1998). Further, Paul Black and Dylan William found that grades are
not the best motivation for achievement and sometimes act as a block to success. What works
best, they say are comments without grades. Feedback can be both formal and informal in
nature. We can describe feedback as a dialogue between students to correct or affirm a
behaviour.
Based on the given statement:
1. How does giving feedback benefit students?
2. Why are gold stars and grades not considered as good teachers feedback?
Page 12
3. What were the findings of Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam and what works best?
4. How would you describe feedback as?
CASE 2: (2 marks)
Read the passage below and answer the following questions given below:
B. Human beings are naturally curious about the world around them and are always in
the process of discovering the same. During childhood, they make efforts to explore
the environment, and their experiences with the environment help them to understand
it better. Children become aware that the world consists of various options for them of
which they must make choices. They can make choices but may be unable to base
their decisions on reasoning. In an individual, the ability to think critically arises
partly from his/her experiences and may not be present in children. It is essential that
children be provided opportunities that encourage them to think autonomously and
develop reasoning abilities, to prepare them for decisions in life that require them to
make appropriate choices.
Based on the given statement:
1. Mention the quality human beings possess that directs them through the process of
discovering?
2. What occurs during childhood?
3. Children think critically. Agree/ Disagree
4. Why is there a need to provide opportunities and encourage children to think?

Reflection is one of the important aspects of learning. The reflection time is needed to
process information is directly proportional to the amount of information that is to be
accumulated. So, if sometimes students stop paying attention in class, it does not necessarily
mean that they are not involved. They may be doing something which is necessary for
learning reflection. Also, taking a break between different difficult tasks facilitates better
learning. It is common tendency in human that we are interested in things that hold a meaning
for us and ignore other information. As you have already read and studied, the brain
prioritises information. Hence, relating things to the learner’s life and prior knowledge is
advantageous for learning. Low moderate stress also helps one to be attentive, but high stress
can be detrimental to the learner.
Based on the given statement:
Q1. What facilitates learning better?
Q2. Why is reflection one of the important aspects of learning?
Q3. What is the common tendency in human relating to interest?
Q4. What helps one to be attentive?
