and feel small bits in it.

Q2 Is it dry, damp, rough, smooth, hard or grainy?

Sample answer: My soil is dry and grainy. When I rub it, I feel tiny bits in it.

− Exp anat on

Test your soil like this:
Dry: it falls apart like dust .

Damp: it feels cool and sticks a little to your fingers .

Rough or grainy: you feel tiny bits when you rub it.
Smooth: it feels soft, like flour.
Hard: it is in lumps that do not break easily.

Why Soil is made from rocks that have broken into tiny pieces These pieces
: .

make it feel grainy.

Q3 Did you find any leaves or insects in the soil?

Spread the soil on a paper. Look closely at it.
Sample answer: Yes. I found small bits of dry leaves and a thin root. I also saw two tiny ants.

Q6 If you do not hear any sounds of birds, what do you think is the reason?

Possible reasons:
 There may be few trees or plants near you. Birds live near plants.
 There may be too much noise, like traffic. It can cover the soft bird sounds.
 The birds may be away or quiet at that time.

− Exp anat on

Sample answer: I did not hear birds because there are no big trees near my building. The
road is also very noisy.

Why Birds use plants for food and nests Where there are few plants there are
: . ,

fewer birds.

Q7 Do you hear more bird sounds—
In the early morning?
In the afternoon?
In the evening?

Sample answer: I hear the most bird sounds in the early morning. I hear many in the evening
too. In the afternoon, I hear only a few.

− Exp anat on

Q1 One day Suma found a caterpillar on a tagar plant. She found it interesting. She
observed it for about 10 minutes. It was eating tender leaves continuously. Her mother

came close to her. She guided her to observe the caterpillar each day. Suma became
more curious. Consult an elder person and organise the following changes in order.

☐ Now it was a butterfly .

☐ The caterpillar formed a cocoon .

☐ I t flew away gently.

☐ One day it stopped eating .

☐ I t came out of the cocoon.

The correct order is:
 One day it stopped eating.
 The caterpillar formed a cocoon.
 It came out of the cocoon.
 Now it was a butterfly.
 It flew away gently.
Here are the numbers in the bookʼs boxes:

4 Now it was a butterfly.

2 The caterpillar formed a cocoon.

5 It flew away gently.

1 One day it stopped eating.

3 It came out of the cocoon.

Why A caterpillar does not stay a caterpillar It stops eating and forms a
: .

cocoon. It comes out as a butterfly.

For parents: The case that a butterfly caterpillar makes is properly called a chrysalis
(pupa). A cocoon is the silk case that a moth caterpillar spins. The book uses the word

“cocoonˮ, which is fine at this level.

them and some underneath them.
Soil is the topmost layer of the Earthʼs surface. It is made from rocks broken into tiny
pieces, old leaves, roots, stems, and living and dead animals like insects.
Many insects and other creatures live in the soil. Ants, termites, small beetles and
grasshoppers move on the top layer. Earthworms and millipedes may appear when it rains.
Animals, birds and insects use different parts of plants for food, shelter and resting.
Food: camels eat leaves, monkeys eat fruits, caterpillars munch leaves, and sunbirds and
butterflies drink nectar.
Shelter and rest: owls use tree hollows, squirrels and crows build nests with twigs,
tailorbirds stitch leaves, and bats and leopards rest on branches.
