Look at the questions asked by Rohan and Anjali

Q1 Tick the question that is the most appropriate for finding the ‘most liked subject’?
Why do you think so? Discuss with your friends and teacher.

ANSWER

Rohan asked

Which subjects do you like?

Mathematics, Languages, Arts

Arts, Languages

Languages, The World Around Us, P.E.

Anjali asked

Which subject do you like the most?

Mathematics

Languages

The World Around Us

The two questions the children asked, with a few of the answers they got.

Tick Anjali’s question — “Which subject do you like the most?”
Look at what each question brings back.

Rohan’s question lets a child name many subjects. One child said three subjects, another
said two.
Anjali’s question lets a child name only one subject — the favourite one.

45 children, Rohan’s way → more than 45 answers

45 children, Anjali’s way → exactly 45 answers

Page 4

Class 4 Maths Chapter 14 Data Handling AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why it happens: To find the most liked subject we must count one vote from each
child. Only Anjali’s question gives one vote per child, so the counts can be compared
fairly.

Tip: Before you collect data, always check that your question has only one answer.
That is the first step of data handling.

Count each letter in the list once, then write the count in the table.

M → 10 L → 8 T → 7 P.E. → 11 A → 9

The filled table looks like this:

Physical Education (P.E.) 11

Arts (A) 9

Total 45

10 + 8 + 7 + 11 + 9 = 45

Why it happens: Every one of the 45 children chose one subject. So the five
numbers must add up to 45. If they do not, a letter has been missed while counting.

Check it yourself: Add your five numbers. If the total is not 45, count that column
again.

In Way 2 each subject has its own row with one number beside it. You just read the numbers
and compare them.

Why it happens: A table has already done the counting for us and has put like with
like. Sorted data is faster to read than raw data.

Tip: Way 1 is still useful — it is how you write the answers down while you collect
them. The table comes afterwards.

How Rohan and Anjali each recorded the golas the children ate. Rohan drew one child for each gola;
Anjali drew one gola for each gola.

First count each row, then colour each empty gola outline with the colour that answers that
question.

COLOUR OF GOLA GOLAS EATEN BY BOYS BY GIRLS

Red 8 4 4

Blue 5 4 1

Orange 7 3 4

Yellow 10 6 4

Total 30 17 13

The gola beside question 1(a) → colour it yellow (10 golas, the most).
The gola beside question 1(b) → colour it blue (5 golas, the fewest).
The gola beside question 2 → colour it yellow.
The gola beside question 3 → colour it yellow.
The gola beside question 4 → girls ate red, orange and yellow the same number of times, so
any one of those three may be coloured.

Why it happens: Rohan drew one child for every gola and Anjali drew one gola for
every gola. So both rows of red have the same length, and counting either one gives
the same number.

Check it yourself: 8 + 5 + 7 + 10 = 30. Rohan’s record and Anjali’s record both show
30 golas.

ANSWER

Rohan Anjali

How Rohan and Anjali each recorded the golas the children ate. Rohan drew one child for each gola;
Anjali drew one gola for each gola.

Count the pictures in each row.

COLOUR OF GOLA GOLAS EATEN BY BOYS BY GIRLS

Red 8 4 4

Blue 5 4 1

Orange 7 3 4

Yellow 10 6 4

Total 30 17 13

Longest row → yellow, 10 golas

Shortest row → blue, 5 golas

a) The children eat the yellow gola the most.
b) They eat the blue gola the least.
How do you know? Because the rows are drawn one below the other with pictures of the same
size. The longest row has the most golas and the shortest row has the fewest. I also counted: 10
is the biggest number and 5 is the smallest.

Why it happens: When every picture stands for one gola and the pictures are the
same size, a longer row always means a bigger number.

Use Rohan’s record. In it a plain stick figure is a boy and a figure with a skirt is a girl. Count only
the boys in each row.

Blue 5 4 1

Yellow 10 6 4

Total 30 17 13

Red 4, Blue 4, Orange 3, Yellow 6

6 is the biggest

Boys ate the yellow golas the most — 6 boys.

Why it happens: Rohan’s way of recording keeps boys and girls apart, so we can
count just one group.

Check it yourself: 4 + 4 + 3 + 6 = 17 boys, and 4 + 1 + 4 + 4 = 13 girls. 17 + 13 = 30,
the total number of golas.

Orange 7 3 4

Yellow 10 6 4

Total 30 17 13

Red 4, Blue 1, Orange 4, Yellow 4

Three colours are equal at the top. Girls ate red, orange and yellow golas equally the most — 4
of each.

Why it happens: When two or more rows have the same largest count, there is no
single winner. All of them share the top place.

Note about the book: The question expects one colour, but the picture on page 206
gives a three-way tie among girls (4 red, 4 orange, 4 yellow). Count the girl figures in
your book and you will see the same. Write all three colours in your answer.

I used Rohan’s way for most of the questions.

For question 1 and question 2 (most and least) either record works, because both rows have
the same length. Anjali’s is quicker to read, since each picture is a gola.
For question 3 and question 4 only Rohan’s record works. It draws a boy or a girl for each
gola, so it holds one extra piece of information.

Why it happens: Anjali’s record only says how many. Rohan’s record says how many
and who. A question about boys and girls can only be answered by the record that
keeps boys and girls apart.

Tip: Before you start collecting data, think about what you will want to ask later.
Then record enough to answer it.

Activity — Chess or Cricket — Page 207
Collecting data from your own class

Q1 Find out from your classmates how many of them play only chess, only cricket, both
or neither.

ANSWER

Write your classmates’ answers here

The empty space the book leaves on page 207 for your own record.

This is your own survey, so your numbers will be your class’s numbers. Do it like this.

1. Frame one clear question: “Which of these do you play — chess, cricket, both, or neither?”
2. Make four headings on a page: Only chess, Only cricket, Both, Neither.

Page 37

Class 4 Maths Chapter 14 Data Handling AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

3. Ask every classmate one by one. Put one mark under the heading they choose.
4. Also write B for a boy and G for a girl beside each mark, because two questions later ask
about boys and girls.
5. At the end, count the marks under each heading.

What a correct result looks like: each classmate is counted exactly once, so the four counts
added together must equal the number of children in your class.

only chess + only cricket + both + neither = number of children in the class

Sample answer: in a class of 30 children — only chess 6, only cricket 12, both 8, neither 4.

6 + 12 + 8 + 4 = 30 ✔

Why it happens: The four groups do not overlap. A child who plays both is counted
in “Both” only, not again in “only chess”.

Tip: Write the marks as you ask, not from memory. That is exactly what Anjali and
Rohan did with the clipboard.

Move the marks you collected into the table. Girls go in one column and boys in the other.

Total 14 16

Page 39

Class 4 Maths Chapter 14 Data Handling AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

14 girls + 16 boys = 30 children ✔

Why it happens: The table only re-arranges the marks; it does not change them. So
the table total must be the same as the class strength.

In that class, Boys play cricket the most.

Why it happens: The “Both” row belongs to chess and to cricket, so it is counted
once in each of these two answers.

Tip: Your class may give the opposite answer. That is fine — data answers change
with the data.

In a pictograph one picture stands for one thing, so a longer row always means a bigger

Different ways of recording hold different information. Pictures of children keep boys and
girls apart; pictures of golas only give the total.
The counts in a table must add up to the number of people you asked. That is how you
