NCERT Solutions — Chapter 1: Living Together
Chapter 1 of Our Wondrous World opens Unit 1, Our Community. Chandan takes you round his village — the
playground, the banyan tree, the road, the shop, the post office and the well. Then the children plan a Van
Mahotsav, the tree-planting festival, and the whole village joins in: one mends the benches, one repairs the
street light, one brings saplings. The chapter carries a Write box, three Activity boxes, three Discuss boxes
and the closing Let us reflect set with four riddles about public places.

A Tour Around My Village

WRITE

Q1 Look at the picture of Chandan's village. What do you see in the picture? Describe
below.

POST OFFICE

Chandan’s village, redrawn from the picture on page 3 of the book.

The picture shows Chandan's village — its houses, its road, its pond and its people, all in
one place.
Look at the picture in three rounds. It is easier that way.

1. Places and buildings: houses with sloping roofs, a water tank standing on tall legs, a post
office, a small shop with a coloured awning, a road going through the village, a pond and a
well.
2. People: a woman carrying a basket on her head, a boy riding a bicycle with sacks tied
behind, children playing with a ball, and a car going down the road.
3. Nature and animals: two big trees, a white cow grazing near the pond, and the big banyan
tree with its long roots hanging down.

Sample answer: I see Chandan's village. On one side there is a pond, and a white cow is grazing
beside it. Two big trees stand at the two ends of the village. One of them is a banyan tree, and
its long roots hang down to the ground. There are houses with sloping roofs, a tall water tank, a
post office and a small shop. A road goes through the middle of the village. A red car is on the
road, and a boy is riding a bicycle with sacks on it. A woman is walking with a basket on her
head. Two children are playing with a ball. On one side there is a well with a bucket hanging
from a pulley.

Page 4

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 1 Living Together AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why this matters: Every place in the picture is used by many people, not by one
family alone. The people and these shared places together make Chandan's
community.

Tip: Chandan tells us two more things on page 3 that the picture also shows — the
big playground near his house, and the banyan tree at the corner of the playground
where the elders gather to talk.

Public places in our community

DISCUSS

Q1 Why do you think it is important to have places like parks, schools, hospitals and
bus stops in your locality?

These places are important because each one gives the whole locality something that no
single family can make at home.

PLACE WHY THE LOCALITY NEEDS IT

Park A safe place to run, play and sit. Elders come for a morning walk — Mallika's
grandmother comes with her friends every day.

School Children learn to read, write and count, and they make friends there.

Hospital / health It treats people when they fall ill, and gives babies their vaccines.
centre

Bus stop People can catch a bus to school, to work or to the next town.

All of these are public places. That means anyone may use them — old or young, rich or poor.

Why it matters: Public places are used for playing, relaxing and meeting others.
People also come together there to clean and decorate on special days. These
shared experiences bring us closer and create beautiful memories.

Q2 How would life be different if one or more of these places in your locality did not
exist?

Life would become much harder, and far lonelier. Take away one place at a time and see what
happens.

No park: children would have to play on the road, which is not safe. Mallika's grandmother
would have nowhere to take her morning walk, and there would be less clean air to breathe.
No school: children would stay at home. They would not learn to read and write, and they
would not meet their friends every day.
No hospital: a sick person would have to travel far for treatment. A small illness could turn
into a big one on the way.

Page 7

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 1 Living Together AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

No bus stop: people would have to walk long distances. Many would reach school and work
late, or not go at all.

The chapter shows exactly this. In Kanker, when the Chinar river overflowed, "reaching schools
and hospitals became a major challenge" — until the community built a bridge.

Why it happens: We hardly notice a shared place while it is there. We feel how much
we need it only when it is gone.

Q3 What can you do to keep these places clean and safe?

I can look after a public place in small ways, every single day.

1. Throw waste only in the dustbin. If there is no dustbin, carry the waste home.
2. Do not pluck flowers or break branches in the park.
3. Do not scribble on walls, benches or slides.
4. Water the new saplings and put a guard around them so that animals do not eat them.
5. Tell an elder at once if a street light, a tap or a bench is broken — that is just what Babita and
Sameer did in the story.
6. Join a cleanliness drive with friends, and wear gloves while picking up litter.
7. Put leaves and food waste into a pit. They turn into manure and make the soil better.
8. Walk on the footpath and cross the road only at the crossing, so that the place stays safe too.

Why it works: A public place has no single owner. It stays clean only if every person
who uses it keeps it clean.

Activity 2 — Page 6
Van Mahotsav: A Festival for Planting Trees

ACTIVITY

Q1 Let us create a colourful poster to help Chandan and his friends invite people from
their neighbourhood to participate in the Van Mahotsav.

Do this:

1. Take a chart paper, sketch pens and colours.

Page 8

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 1 Living Together AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

2. Write the name of the festival in big letters at the top — VAN MAHOTSAV.
3. Draw a big tree, a small sapling and a watering can. Colour them green and brown.
4. Write the date and time and the place — for example, 1 July, 8 a.m., the park near our
school.
5. Write one short line that invites people: Come, let us plant a tree together!
6. At the bottom write who is inviting — your class and your school.
7. Colour the poster brightly and put it up where many people pass.

A good poster must have these five things: the name of the festival, a picture, the date and
time, the place, and one inviting line. If any one is missing, people will not know when or where
to come.
Sample answer:

VAN MAHOTSAV
Come, let us plant a tree together!

1 July, 8 a.m. · Park near our school
Invited by: Class IV, Government Primary School
A sample invitation poster for Van Mahotsav.

Did you know? Van Mahotsav is also called the Tree Planting Festival. It is celebrated
every year in India during the rainy season, from 1 July to 7 July. People plant trees to
protect the environment and make the earth greener. That is why the rainy season
fits so well in the drawing.

Helping Hands in the Community

ACTIVITY

Q1 Identify the people who help in maintaining your locality. What are their
occupations?

Many people look after our locality. Each one has a different occupation — that is, a
different kind of work.

WHO I SEE IN MY LOCALITY OCCUPATION WHAT THEY DO FOR US

The person who sweeps our lane every Sweeper Sweeps the road and empties the
morning dustbins.

The person who looks after the park Gardener Plants saplings, waters them and trims
plants the hedges.

The person who climbs up to the street Electrician Mends the street lights, wires and
light switches.

The person who builds and mends walls Mason Lays bricks and cement, and repairs
broken walls.

The person who makes benches, doors Carpenter Cuts and joins wood.
and gates

The person who mends the tap and the Plumber Repairs taps, pipes and the water line.
handpump

The person who brings letters to our Postman Delivers letters and parcels.
door

The person in uniform at the corner Police Keeps the area safe and controls the
traffic.

The person at the health centre Doctor / Nurse Treats people when they are ill.

The person at the corner shop Shopkeeper Sells food, clothes and things we need
daily.

How to find out: walk around your lane with an elder, greet these people, ask their name and
what work they do, and notice the tool each one carries. The tool often tells you the occupation.

All five kinds of work are needed to develop and maintain a park: building and mending walls,

Why it happens: Every job needs its own skill and its own tool. The park in the story
became ready only because Sameer brought wood and nails for the benches, Babita
mended the street light, and Noor brought saplings from her plant nursery.

Q3 Find out from your family members or neighbours about their work. What
questions would you ask them? Here are some examples: (a) What do you like the
most about your work? (b) What types of tools or things do you use? (c) What
challenges do you face?

Do this:

1. Choose one person at home or next door. Ask politely when they are free.
2. Keep your questions short. Write the answers in a notebook in a few words.
3. Ask one extra question about anything that surprises you.
4. Say thank you at the end, and read your notes out to the class.

Questions I would ask (the book's three, and a few more):

What do you like the most about your work?
What types of tools or things do you use?
What challenges do you face?
Who taught you this work?
At what time do you start and finish?
How does your work help other people in our locality?
What should I learn if I want to do this work one day?

Sample answer:

MY QUESTION WHAT MY AUNT, A TAILOR, SAID

What do you like the most about "I like it when a child wears the dress I have stitched and smiles."
your work?

What types of tools or things do "A sewing machine, scissors, a measuring tape, chalk, pins and
you use? thread."

What challenges do you face? "Before a festival there is too much work and very little time, and
my eyes hurt at night."

Who taught you this work? "My mother taught me when I was fourteen."

How does your work help our "People get their clothes stitched and mended close to home, so
locality? they do not have to go to town."

Why we ask: Asking questions is the simplest way to learn about the work that
keeps our community running. It also shows the worker that we value what they do.

Community Bridge Across a River

DISCUSS

Q1 It is important for communities to come together in times of need. What do you
think about this statement?

I agree with this statement. When many hands work together, a big problem becomes a small
one.
The chapter gives a real example. In Kanker, in Chhattisgarh, the Chinar river often overflows in
the rainy season. Goods and vehicles could not move, and reaching schools and hospitals
became a major challenge. During one such rainy season in 2024, the entire community came
together and built a simple yet strong bridge in just two days, using bamboo, stones and other
material. Now students can reach their schools and villagers can cross the river easily.
The same thing happened in Chandan's village. The park needed repairs, and one family alone
could not have done it. Sameer mended the benches, Babita repaired the street light, Noor
brought saplings, and the park was ready in no time.

Why it works: One person working alone would have taken months to build that
bridge. A whole community finished it in two days, because each person did one
small part. Working together also makes people feel that they belong to one
another.

Did you know? An ant colony works in exactly this way. Some ants collect food,
some take care of the babies and some protect their home. Bees share their work
too — gathering food, protecting the young ones and building hives.

Q2 Do people in your locality come together and support each other? Can you
remember one such occasion?

Do this:

1. Ask your parents or grandparents about a day when the whole lane helped.
2. Think of the last festival, a wedding, a heavy rain, a power cut or someone's illness.
3. Write when it happened, what the problem was, who came to help, what each person did, and
how it ended.

Page 14

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 1 Living Together AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

A good answer names real people and real jobs — not just "everybody helped".
Sample answer: Yes, people in my locality do come together. Last year, heavy rain filled our lane
with water and mud. On Sunday morning every family came out. My father and two uncles
cleared the choked drain. My mother and the neighbours swept the mud away with brooms. We
children picked up the plastic bags and carried them to the dustbin. By evening the lane was
clean again, and everyone drank tea together at Sharma uncle's house.

Why it matters: Just as the people of the village came together to solve a problem,
our schools and neighbourhoods also rely on people working together as a team.

Write — Page 11
Sharing a Meal

WRITE

Q1 Think about your family or community. How do you work together to help each
other while preparing for a festival or any other occasion?

Do this:

1. Choose one festival or occasion that your family gets ready for.
2. Make a list of all the jobs that have to be done before the day.
3. Write who does each job, and what you yourself do.
4. End with one line about how you feel when the work is shared.

What a good answer shows: that the work was divided, and that each person did the part they
do best — exactly as in the chapter, where groups were formed for cleaning, planting saplings,
watering and cooking.
Sample answer: My family gets ready for Diwali together. My grandmother makes the sweets,
because she knows the old recipes. My mother and my aunt clean the whole house. My father
brings the diyas, the colours and the new clothes. My sister and I make the rangoli at the door
and hang up the lights. In the evening we all do the puja together, and then we take a plate of
sweets to our neighbours. Because each one of us takes one job, the work finishes early and we
still have time to play.

Why sharing works: When the work is shared, it becomes lighter and it also
becomes fun. In the chapter, everyone worked together and helped each other —
and then sat down to a community feast with jokes and laughter.

2. Everyone can give something. Sameer had wood and nails, Babita could mend the street

enough.
3. Nobody is left out. Because the children cleaned the park and planted trees, Mallika's
grandmother and her friends now enjoy their morning walk and get better air to breathe.
4. People become friends. After the hard work, the whole village sat down to a community
feast, with jokes, laughter and delicious food.

Why it happens: Helping others turns many separate families into one team. In
Sikkim, people who are specialists in agriculture, called Khetala, come together at
harvest time. The crops get cut easily, and a sense of bond grows among the people.

Student School bus driver

Caretaker Cook

School

The same web, with one role written in each box.

Now the table. Write one line for each person, saying what they do for the school.

PERSON HOW DO THEY HELP IN THE SCHOOL?

Teacher A teacher helps students learn new things.

School bus driver He brings the children to school and takes them home safely.

Caretaker She keeps the rooms, the ground and the taps clean and tidy.

Cook She cooks the mid-day meal for all the children.

You may also add the gardener who looks after the school garden, the sweeper who keeps the
ground clean, the librarian who gives out books, and the guard at the gate.

Why it matters: A school works only when all these people do their part — exactly
like the village at Van Mahotsav, where one person mended the benches, one
repaired the light and one brought the saplings.

Q2 (a) Why is it important for everyone to work as a team in a school?

Because a school has many different jobs, and no single person can do all of them.

Page 19

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 1 Living Together AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Every job gets done on time — the bus reaches, the bell rings, the class begins, the meal is
ready.
Each person does what they are best at. The teacher teaches, the cook cooks, the driver
drives.
Children stay safe, because many grown-ups are watching over different places.
The school stays clean, because the caretaker, the teachers and the children all keep it clean.
Problems get solved quickly — a broken fan or a blocked tap is mended before it troubles
anyone.

See what happens when one part of the team is missing. If the bus driver does not come,
children reach late and miss the first lesson. If the cook does not cook, the children stay hungry
all afternoon.

Why it happens: A team is like a chain. If even one link is missing, the whole chain
becomes weak.

Q3 (b) What is your role as a member of your school community?

Do this: think about one ordinary school day and write down every small thing you do that
helps someone else. That list is your role.
A good answer names actions, not feelings. "I love my school" is not a role. "I water the plants
on my turn" is.
Sample answer: I am a student, so my first role is to come to school on time and finish my
work. I keep my desk and my classroom clean, and I always put waste in the dustbin. It is my
turn to water the plants in the school garden on Wednesdays. I help my friends when they
cannot do a sum. I do not leave the tap running after drinking water. On our cleanliness drive I
picked up the plastic lying on the ground. When a new child joined our class, I sat with her and
showed her the way to the library.

Why it matters: Every member of a community has a role, even the youngest one. A
school becomes good not only because of its teachers, but because of what each
child does every day.

Why the last column matters: Doing the activity is only half the work. Writing down
what you learnt is what turns a fun morning into something you keep.

Q5 Match the riddles with their solutions hidden in the pictures.

The four pictures printed beside the riddles on page 15, in the order the book prints
them.

Ans: Bus stand (bus stop).
The line that gives it away: "Buses come and buses go, To places high and low." Only at a bus
stand do buses keep coming and going. The first line helps too — it is "a place where people
wait… to catch a ride".
Where it is hidden: in picture 3 — a bus standing beside a shelter, a board that reads BUS
STAND, a bench, and people waiting there.

Tip: The picture printed next to riddle (a) is not its answer. The book has mixed up
the four pictures on purpose — that is why the task says match the riddles with their
solutions.

Ans: Post office.
The line that gives it away: "I keep letters far and near, With stamps and parcels waiting here."
Letters, stamps and parcels belong only to a post office. "Write a note and drop it in" points to
the letter box outside it.

box standing outside, and a postman walking away with his bag.

Why a post office matters: It is a public place too. It carries our letters and parcels
to people far away, so it keeps a community joined to other communities.

The line that gives it away: "Fruits, vegetables and other goods are found." A place that sells

Q10 Create three groups in the class. Each group would think about a situation in their
locality that needs to be improved. Identify activities that can make a difference to
the situation. This could be related to cleaning, helping others, organising an
event, etc. Complete the table below.

GROUP SITUATION ACTIVITY YOUR ROLE

Group 1 ________ ________ ________

Group 2 ________ ________ ________

Group 3 ________ ________ ________

Do this:

1. Make three groups. Each group picks one thing in the locality that is not good enough today.
2. Write it in the Situation column in one plain sentence — what is wrong, and where.
3. In the Activity column write what the group will actually do about it, with a day and a place.
4. In Your role, each child writes the one job they themselves will do. Do not write "I will help".
5. Show the table to your teacher before you begin, and take an elder along.

Sample answer:

GROUP SITUATION ACTIVITY YOUR ROLE

Group 1 Plastic and paper lie all A Sunday cleanliness drive, I will bring the two bags and

shop.

Why the last column matters most: A plan works only when every person knows
exactly what they will do. That is how the villagers repaired the park — Sameer
named the benches, Babita named the street light, Noor named the saplings.

Page 27

Q11 (a) Do you think working together can make your activities more useful? Give
reasons.

Yes. Working together makes our activities far more useful. Here are my reasons.

1. More gets done in the same time. One broom cleans one path. Twenty brooms clean the
whole park in that same hour.
2. More ideas come up. Each person thinks of something the others missed — two bags
instead of one, or a guard around every sapling.
3. Each person does what they are best at. One draws the poster, one digs the pits, one
carries the water.
4. More people are helped. A drive by one child cleans a corner; a drive by the whole class
cleans the park that everyone uses.
5. It becomes fun. People who enjoyed the work come back the next time, so the good work
keeps going.

Why it happens: A big task, split among many hands, becomes many small tasks.
That is how the community in Kanker built a whole bridge in just two days.

Q12 (b) How will your involvement in these activities help the community?

When I take part, the community gains in five ways.

1. The place itself gets better. The park becomes clean, the lane gets shady trees, and the
elderly neighbours get the help they need.
2. Others join in. In the story, the children began the work and then their parents and the
other villagers joined them. People follow what they see.
3. Public property lasts longer. A bench that is mended and a light that works stay useful for
years.
4. People begin to trust one another. Neighbours who have worked side by side help each
other again the next time.
5. I learn something I keep. I learn a skill, and I learn the habit of helping, and I will carry both
into my grown-up life.

Sample answer: If I water the saplings in our lane every Monday and Thursday, in a few years
the lane will have shade. People waiting for the bus will stand under those trees. My little
brother will play under them. That is how one small job of mine helps the whole community.

Page 28

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 1 Living Together AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why it matters: A community grows the way a sapling does — slowly, and only if
someone keeps caring for it.

Q13 Ask your family about any one special skill or craft (for example — basket making,
wall painting, pottery) that is famous in your region.

Do this:

1. Ask the oldest person in your home. They usually remember the most.
2. Ask these questions and write the answers in a notebook:

What is the name of the craft?
What material is it made from?
Which tools are used?
Who in our family or village used to make it?
How long does one piece take?
Where is it sold, and who buys it?
Do people still make it today?

3. Write five or six lines, and draw a picture of the craft beside them.

Sample answer: My grandmother told me about basket making, which is famous in our
region. The baskets are made from bamboo. The bamboo is first cut into thin strips and soaked
in water so that it bends easily. Then the strips are woven over and under, round and round,
until the basket takes shape. My grandmother's uncle used to make them, and one basket took
him almost a whole day. The baskets are used to carry vegetables and grain, and are sold in the
weekly market. Today fewer people make them, because plastic baskets are cheaper.

Find out: India has a famous craft in almost every region — Madhubani painting in
Bihar, Warli wall painting in Maharashtra, blue pottery in Jaipur, bamboo baskets in
Assam and the north-east, Pattachitra in Odisha, and wooden toys in Channapatna
in Karnataka. Find out which one belongs to your own region.

Why this is part of the chapter: A craft is a community skill. It is passed from an
elder to a child, just as the people of Sikkim pass on their harvesting help, the
Khetala way.

Chapter at a glance
A community is the people who live near one another and share the same places. In
Chandan's village everybody uses the playground, the road, the shops and the well. The
elders meet under the big banyan tree at the corner of the playground.
Public places belong to everyone. Parks, schools, markets, playgrounds, roads and bus
stops are used by all of us — for playing, relaxing and meeting others. People also come
together to clean and decorate them on special days, and these shared days make beautiful
memories.
Van Mahotsav is the tree-planting festival. It is celebrated every year in India in the rainy
season, from 1 July to 7 July. People plant trees to protect the environment and make the
earth greener.
Work becomes light when it is shared. Sameer brought wood and nails and mended the
benches. Babita repaired the street light. Noor brought saplings from her plant nursery.
Groups were formed for cleaning, planting, watering and cooking — and the park was
ready in no time.
Communities come together in times of need. In Kanker, Chhattisgarh, the Chinar river
overflows in the rainy season. In 2024 the whole community built a simple but strong bridge
in just two days, using bamboo, stones and other material.
Animals live in communities too. In an ant colony some ants collect food, some look after
the babies and some guard the home. Bees also share work — gathering food, protecting
the young ones and building hives.
Sharing a meal completes the work. After the planting, the villagers brought vegetables
and cereals and ate a community feast on banana leaves. The leaves were later buried in a
pit, where they become manure and improve the soil.
