NCERT Solutions — Chapter 11: A Journey to the
Magical Mountains
Chapter 11 of Santoor belongs to Unit 4, Up High. A Journey to the Magical Mountains is a short story about
a girl named Minam and her grandfather, who was once a Sherpa. He takes her on a day-long walk into the
Himalayas — past a river, past yaks, over snow, up to a hilltop from where they can see Mount Everest. The
rest of the chapter grows out of that walk: mountain words in a crossword, a landscape to label, body-part
words like foot of the mountain, and the joining words and, or, but and because.

A Journey to the Magical Mountains (story)
LET US READ
Story Let us Read — A Journey to the Magical Mountains. Read the story and enjoy the
journey Minam and her grandfather make into the Himalayas.
This is a story about one whole day. Minam walks into the mountains with her grandfather and
comes home changed. Read it in three parts.
Part 1 — Who they are (page 111). Minam is a young girl. She lives in a small village at the foot
of the mighty Himalayas. Her grandfather was once a Sherpa, so he knows the mountains well.
Minam loves his mountain stories, and the two often go on long walks together.
Part 2 — Going up (pages 112–114). One sunny morning her grandfather says, “Minam, you
have become strong, and you can walk for a long distance.” Minam packs rotis with achaar, two
water bottles and apples. On the way they see flowers, tall trees and birds she has never heard
before. They eat lunch by a small river. Higher up they see yaks. Higher still there is snow, and
they make a snowman. At the top of a hill her grandfather points to Mount Everest.
Part 3 — Coming down (page 115). They hear a santoor played by an old man under a tree.
They watch mountain goats jumping from rock to rock. Back home, Minam thanks her
grandfather. He tells her the mountains teach us about strength, beauty and the wonders of
nature, and asks her to respect and protect them. Minam promises to do so.

Minam makes her promise.
The seven stages of the journey Minam and her grandfather made, in the order the story tells them.
This strip is a study aid — your book prints the story as paintings, not as a chart.
Why the mountains are called “magical”: Nothing magic really happens in the
story. Minam calls the mountains magical because every part of the day surprised
her — new birds, cold clear water, yaks, her first snow, and a peak so tall it shone in
the sun. Wonder is the magic here.
Tip for reading aloud: There are four speeches in the story — three by the
grandfather and one by Minam. Read the grandfather’s lines slowly and warmly, and
Minam’s line with excitement.

A. Answer the following.
LET US THINK
A.1 Who was Minam, and what did she enjoy to do with her grandfather?
Minam was a young girl who lived in a small village at the foot of the mighty Himalayas.
She enjoyed listening to her grandfather’s stories about the mountains. She also enjoyed
going on long walks with him. The story says, “The two of them would often go on long walks
together.”
Why his stories were so good: Her grandfather “was once a Sherpa”. A Sherpa
guides climbers in the Himalayas, so he had really been high up in those mountains.
His stories came from things he had seen himself.
A note on the question: The book prints “what did she enjoy to do”. In careful
English we say enjoy doing, not enjoy to do. So the question should read “what did
she enjoy doing with her grandfather?” Write your own answer using enjoyed
listening and enjoyed going.
A.2 What did Minam’s grandfather say to her one sunny morning?
One sunny morning her grandfather said:
“Minam, you have become strong, and you can walk for
a long distance. Today, I will take you on a special journey
to the mountains. We’ll see the beauty of the Himalayas up close!”
In short, he told her three things:
1. She had become strong and could walk a long way.
2. He would take her on a special journey to the mountains that very day.
3. They would see the beauty of the Himalayas from close by.

Why a river is a good lunch spot: It is flat, it is shady and there is fresh water.
Walkers in the hills almost always rest beside water.
A.5 What was Minam's reaction when she saw snow for the first time?
Minam was amazed. The story says, “Minam had never seen so much snow before!”
She did not just look at it. She played in it. She and her grandfather made a small snowman.
They laughed and played together, “making memories Minam would value forever”.
Why the snow was new to her: Minam lives in a village at the foot of the
mountains, where it does not snow. Snow lies only high up, where the air is very
cold. She had to climb to reach it.
Tip: If a question asks for a reaction, say both what the person felt and what the
person did. Here: she was amazed, and she made a snowman.
A.6 What did Minam promise her grandfather at the end of their journey?
Minam promised to take care of the mountains and to share their magic with everyone
she met.
The promise came from something her grandfather had just said: “The mountains are truly
magical, Minam. They teach us about strength, beauty, and the wonders of nature. Always
remember to respect and protect them.”
Why he asked her this: He had spent his life among these mountains as a Sherpa.
He wanted the next person who loved them — his granddaughter — to look after
them too.
Think about it: Minam’s promise has two halves. One is to protect. The other is to tell
others. A place is safest when many people care about it, not just one.

B. Think and discuss.
THINK AND DISCUSS
B.1 Minam enjoyed learning from her grandfather during their walk. Is there someone
in your family or community who teaches you special things? What have you
learned from them?
This question is about your own life, so your answer is the right one. Nobody can write it for
you.
How to build your answer:
1. Name the person and say who they are to you.
2. Say what they teach you — one skill or one kind of thing.
3. Give one example of something you learnt from them.
4. Say why you like learning from them.
People you could think of: a grandmother, a grandfather, an uncle or aunt, an elder cousin, a
neighbour, a potter, a farmer, a tailor, the gardener at school, or a teacher.
Sample answer: My grandmother teaches me special things. She knows the names
of many plants in our garden. She has taught me which leaves are used when
someone has a cough. Last week she showed me how to plant a tulsi cutting in a
pot. I like learning from her because she lets me do the work myself.
Why this kind of learning matters: Minam did not learn about yaks from a book.
She learnt from someone who had lived among them. Older people carry knowledge
that is not written down anywhere. When we listen to them, that knowledge stays
alive.
B.2 Minam saw yaks and mountain goats helping people in the mountains. Can you
think of animals or things in your surroundings that are very important to the
people around you? How do they help?
Start from the story. In the mountains, the yak gives milk and wool and carries heavy loads.
Now look for the same kind of helper near your home.
What a good answer must have: the name of the animal or thing, and one clear line saying
how it helps people.
Page 8
Class 4 English Chapter 11 A Journey to the Magical Mountains AglaSem · NCERT Solutions
ANIMAL OR THING HOW IT HELPS THE PEOPLE AROUND US
Cow or buffalo Gives milk; its dung is used as fuel and manure.
Bullock Pulls the plough and the cart.
Camel Carries people and loads across hot, sandy land.
Hen Gives eggs.
Honeybee Makes honey and helps flowers turn into fruit.
Earthworm Keeps the soil soft so plants grow well.
Neem tree Gives shade, clean air and leaves used as medicine.
The village well or handpump Gives water for drinking, cooking and washing.
Sample answer: In my village the buffalo is very important. It gives us milk every
morning and evening. My mother makes curd and ghee from that milk. Its dung is
dried and used as fuel. Without the buffalo, many families here would find life much
harder.
Why the yak fits the mountains so well: A yak has thick hair, so it does not feel the
cold, and it walks safely on steep, icy paths. Every animal is suited to the place it lives
in. That is why the mountain people keep yaks, and the desert people keep camels.
B.3 Minam promised to protect the mountains. Is there something in nature around
your home, school, or neighbourhood that you feel should be protected? What
would you do to keep it safe?
Choose one real thing you can actually see near you. A small, real answer is far better than a
big, vague one.
Things you could choose: an old tree, the school garden, a pond or lake, a stream, the park, a
bird’s nest, the birds that come to your roof, or the clean air of your street.
What a good answer must have:
1. Name the thing and where it is.
2. Say why it needs protecting — what is harming it.
3. Give two or three things you yourself can do, not things grown-ups must do.
Page 9
Class 4 English Chapter 11 A Journey to the Magical Mountains AglaSem · NCERT Solutions
Sample answer: The pond behind our school should be protected. People throw
plastic bags and wrappers into it, and the water has become dirty. I would put a
dustbin near the pond with my friends. We would make a poster saying “Please do
not throw waste in the pond”. Once a month our class could clean the bank together.
Why small acts work: Minam did not promise to save the whole Himalayas by
herself. She promised to care for them and to tell others. One child picking up one
wrapper does little; a whole class doing it every month changes the place.

As Minam and her grandfather climbed higher, “soon they could see yaks”. Her grandfather said,

Why yaks and not mountain goats here: Both live in the mountains. But item 5
asks for the animals that are good at climbing rocks, and that is the mountain goats.
So the yaks belong to this blank.

The mouth of a river is the place where it ends and pours its water into a sea, a lake or a bigger

Why we say mouth: Our mouth is the opening through which things pass out of us.
The river’s wide opening does the same job, so we borrow the word.

Why the dictionary is worth opening: Several of these words are close in meaning

one of your labels is wrong.

LET US WRITE
B.1 B. Join the sentences using the correct conjunction.
Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
1. She was hungry. She ate a sandwich. (or/but/because)
She ate a sandwich because she was hungry.
Being hungry is the reason why she ate. Because is the word that gives a reason, so it is the
right choice.
Why the order changes: Because must sit just before the reason. The reason here is
“she was hungry”, so that part moves to the end. Writing “She was hungry because
she ate a sandwich” would say the opposite, and that makes no sense.
Tip: After you join two sentences, read your new sentence aloud. If it sounds odd, try
swapping the two halves.
B.2 B. Join the sentences using the correct conjunction.
Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
2. I wanted to go out. It was too late. (or/and/but)
I wanted to go out, but it was too late.

Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
5. Aman has a pen. Aman has a pencil. Aman has an eraser. (or/because/and)
Aman has a pen, a pencil and an eraser.
Here there are three sentences, not two. All three add information about what Aman has, so we
join them with and.
The rule for a list of three: Put a comma after the first item, and use and only
before the last one. We do not write “a pen and a pencil and an eraser” — that
sounds clumsy.
Notice: The name Aman is written only once. When the same person does
everything, we do not repeat the name in every part.
B.6 B. Join the sentences using the correct conjunction.
Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
6. Simran loves to eat mangoes. She loves bananas. (or/and/but)
Simran loves to eat mangoes and bananas.
She loves both fruits. The second sentence simply adds one more fruit to the first, and and is the
word that adds information.
Why not but: But would show a difference, as in “Simran loves mangoes but not
bananas”. There is no difference here — she likes both.

B.7 B. Join the sentences using the correct conjunction.
Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
7. He ran fast. He missed the bus. (and/but/because)
He ran fast, but he missed the bus.
Running fast should have helped him catch the bus. It did not. The second half surprises us
after the first, so we need but.
The test for but: Ask yourself, “Is the second part a surprise after the first?” If yes,
the answer is but.
B.8 B. Join the sentences using the correct conjunction.
Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
8. She stayed home. She was not feeling well. (or/and/because)
She stayed home because she was not feeling well.
Not feeling well is the reason why she stayed home. Because gives a reason.
Tip: Notice how the two halves already sit in the right order here. Nothing has to
move — just drop because between them.
B.9 B. Join the sentences using the correct conjunction.
Remember (page 121): and adds information · or gives a choice · but shows contrast
(difference) · because gives a reason.
9. I love chocolate. I love vanilla. (and/but/or)
I love chocolate and vanilla.
Both flavours are loved, so the second idea is added to the first. And adds information.
Why not or: Or would mean I love only one of the two and you must choose which.
But the sentences say I love both.

Try this: Change the sentence to “Would you like chocolate or vanilla?” Now or is

10. The baby is crying. He is hungry. (but/or/because)
The baby is crying because he is hungry.
Hunger is the reason for the crying, and because gives a reason.

Let us Speak — Page 123
The ‘Sentence Completion’ game
LET US SPEAK
S.1 Form your class into two groups, A and B. Each group will sit facing to each other.
Follow the instructions to play the ‘Sentence Completion’ game.
1. A child from group A will say the beginning of a sentence such as: “On a bright
summer morning, ............................” (A child from group B will complete the
sentence.)
This is a speaking game, played out loud with the whole class. Nobody writes anything.
How to play your turn:
1. Sit facing group B.
2. Say the opening loudly and clearly: “On a bright summer morning, …”
3. Stop there and look at group B.
4. A child from group B finishes the sentence in his or her own words.
5. Listen quietly while that child speaks.
What makes a good ending: it must fit the beginning, it must make sense, and it should be
one short sentence — not a whole story.
Sample endings for “On a bright summer morning, ______”:
… I went to the market with my mother.
… the koel sat on our mango tree and sang.
… we packed our bags and left for our grandmother’s village.
… Minam and her grandfather set out for the mountains.
Why the sentence must fit the opening: The opening already tells us when it
happened — on a summer morning. So the ending must be something that could
really happen then. “On a bright summer morning, it snowed all day” would not fit.

Make a chart about one mountain animal or bird
LET US DO
D.1 Pick any one of the given mountain animal or bird.
Snow Leopard · Himalayan Tahr · Red Panda · Himalayan Brown Bear · Blood
Pheasant · Yak
Find out details about them. You may include their picture, habitat, adaptation, life
cycle and lifestyle, as will as how they survive in harsh conditions.
Design a colourful chart with drawings, pictures, and captions about the animal or
bird. Make a presentation and present it to the class.
This is a project. You must find the facts yourself, so nobody can hand you the answer. Here is
exactly how to do it well.
Step 1 — Choose one. Pick just one animal or bird from the six given: Snow Leopard, Himalayan
Tahr, Red Panda, Himalayan Brown Bear, Blood Pheasant or Yak.
Step 2 — Find the facts. Look in your school library, in an encyclopaedia for children, or ask
your teacher to help you search online. Write down what you find under these five headings.
HEADING WHAT TO WRITE UNDER IT
Picture A drawing or a printed picture of the animal.
Habitat Where it lives — which mountains, how high up, how cold it is there.
Adaptation The special things in its body that suit that place — thick fur, wide feet, a long tail.
Life cycle and lifestyle How many young ones it has, what it eats, whether it lives alone or in a group.
Surviving harsh conditions How it gets through deep snow, thin air and very cold winters.
Step 3 — Make the chart. Take a big sheet. Write the animal’s name in large letters at the top.
Paste or draw the picture in the middle. Put your five headings around it, with a short caption of
one or two lines under each. Use colours, and leave white space so it is easy to read from a
distance.
Page 57
Class 4 English Chapter 11 A Journey to the Magical Mountains AglaSem · NCERT Solutions
Step 4 — Present it. Hold the chart up. Speak for about two minutes. Say the name first, then
go through the headings one by one. Look at your class, not at the chart.
Sample chart (Yak) — use it as a model, not a copy:
Name: Yak
Habitat: The high, cold mountains of the Himalayas, where snow lies for much of
the year.
Adaptation: A very long, shaggy coat keeps it warm. Its wide, hard hooves grip
rocky and icy ground.
Lifestyle: It eats grass and small mountain plants. It lives in herds with other
yaks.
How it helps people: It gives milk and wool, and carries heavy loads. Our story
says so on page 113.
Surviving the cold: Its thick coat works like a blanket, so it can stand cold that
other animals cannot.
Why every one of these animals lives only in the mountains: Each has a body
built for cold, thin air and steep ground — thick fur, strong legs, a good grip. Take it
down to a hot plain and it would suffer. An animal fits the place it lives in.
Note — a printing slip in the book: Page 124 prints “as will as how they survive”. It
should read “as well as how they survive”.

Facts about the first woman to climb Mount Everest twice
LET US EXPLORE
E.1 Collect pictures and facts about the first woman to climb Mount Everest twice.
This is a find-out task. Go and search for yourself — that is the whole point of it.
Where to look: your school library, a children’s encyclopaedia, old newspapers, or an online
search made with your teacher’s help. Ask your teacher to check whatever you find.
What your collection should contain:
1. Her name and where in India she comes from.
Page 58
Class 4 English Chapter 11 A Journey to the Magical Mountains AglaSem · NCERT Solutions
2. The years in which she climbed Mount Everest.
3. One or two pictures — of her, and of Mount Everest.
4. Any award she has been given.
5. One line saying why her climb matters to you.
Sample answer — check the details in your own book or library before you
write them:
The first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest twice was Santosh Yadav of
India. She reached the summit in 1992 and again in 1993. She was born in Haryana.
She was given the Padma Shri for her climbing. She has also spoken a great deal
about looking after the mountains and keeping them clean.
Why this task comes at the end of this chapter: Minam’s grandfather told her that
“many brave people have tried to climb” Mount Everest, and then asked her to
respect and protect the mountains. A climber who did both — reached the top twice
and spoke up for the mountains — is exactly the person this chapter has been
pointing towards.
Tip for presenting it: Stick your pictures on one side of a sheet and write five short
facts on the other. Five clear facts beat a page of copied writing.
Chapter at a glance
Minam and her grandfather. Minam lives in a small village at the foot of the mighty
Himalayas. She loves her grandfather’s mountain stories. He was once a Sherpa, and the
two often go on long walks together.
The journey begins. One sunny morning her grandfather says she has become strong
enough for a special journey. Minam packs rotis with achaar, two water bottles and apples.
They start early and see flowers, tall trees and new birds.
Lunch by the river, then the climb. They eat their rotis beside a small river with clear
water and watch the fish swim. Higher up they see yaks. Grandfather explains that yaks give
milk and wool and carry heavy loads.
Snow, and the top of the hill. Minam sees snow for the first time and makes a small
snowman. From the hilltop she sees the huge peaks shining in the sun, and her grandfather
points to Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.
The way home, and a promise. They hear a santoor played by an old man under a tree and
watch mountain goats jump from rock to rock. Back in the village Minam thanks her
