NCERT Solutions — Chapter 2: Hide and Seek
This chapter is about where a thing is and what it looks like from different places. Playing hide and seek,
drawing a brick, filling a grid and reading a school map all teach the same idea: move to a new place and you
see a new picture.

The children are playing Hide and Seek.

Rani says, “Jagat, all of you go and hide. I will find you.”

So Rani is the seeker.

Jagat, Mini and Bholu run away and hide.

Game = Hide and Seek

Why it happens: In this game one child looks for the others while they hide, and
that is exactly what the four scenes show.

Tip: In Hindi the same game is called लुका -िछपी .

Jagat is looking from the top.

In Scene 1 Jagat is lying on a branch of the tree.

In Scene 4 he is again sitting up on the tree.

He is above everybody else, so he looks down from the top.

Why it happens: A person who climbs up sees things from above. From up there
you see the tops of heads, the top of the roof and the whole ground below.

Tip: Scene 1 itself is drawn as a top view. That is why you can see the whole roof of
the hut in it.

Scene 1 seen from above. The dotted lines show where Rani would look if she turned to face the hut.

No, she will not be able to see all of them.

Rani stands in front of the hut.

Looking at the hut, she can see only its front side and the open ground.

Mini → standing behind the hut. The hut comes in the way. Not seen

Bholu → sitting behind the flower pot at the far corner. Not seen

Jagat → lying on a branch above her, hidden by leaves. Not seen

Why it happens: We see along a straight line. If a wall, a pot or thick leaves stand on
that line, they block the view and the person behind them stays hidden.

Check it yourself: Stand in the classroom and ask a friend to hide behind the door.
Look straight at the door. You cannot see your friend — the door is in the way.

Q2 Mini, Bholu, and Rani draw the same brick. Why are their drawings of the same
brick different? Discuss.

ANSWER

Bholu’s Drawing

The same brick at the top, and the three drawings the children made of it.

Page 12

Because the three children are standing at three different places around the brick.

Bholu stands above the brick → he sees the top face with the 7777 marks.

Mini stands in front → she sees the long flat face.

Rani stands at one side → she sees the small end face.

The brick did not change. Only their place changed.

Why it happens: Our eyes can see only the face that is turned towards us. A brick
has faces of different sizes, so each face gives a different drawing.

Bholu’s photo Jagat’s photo

The same tree photographed by two children standing in two different places.

Did you know? The same thing happened with the tree on this page. From the top
Bholu’s photo shows only a round green patch of leaves. From the front Jagat’s
photo shows the trunk and the branches too.

VIEW OF THE BRICK DRAWING NAME OF THE CHILD

The top view Bholu

The front view Mini

The side view Rani

Bholu’s drawing has the 7777 marks. Those marks are made on the top of a brick. → top

view

Mini’s drawing is the longest and lowest. That is the long face you see from the front. →

front view

Rani’s drawing is the shortest. That is the small end face you see from one side. → side

view

Why it happens: A brick is long, a little wide and thin. So the front face is long, the
side face is short and only the top face carries the mould marks.

8 Pizza cutter Side view The round blade shows as a full circle with the handle at its side.

9 Helmet Side view We see the shape of one side and the glass in front of the face.

Why it happens: A round thing looks like a circle only when we look straight down
on it or straight at it. A tall thing shows its height from the front and the side, but not
from the top.

Tip: Picture 5 is drawn straight on. Some children read it as the front of the bus. Look
for the writing STOP — CHILDREN ON BOARD: that board is always painted on the
back.

OBJECT FRONT VIEW TOP VIEW SIDE VIEW

Bottle Tall shape with a narrow neck A small circle (the cap) Same as the front view

Chair Back, seat and two legs A square seat with the back as a line Like the letter h

Pencil Long thin shape with a point A six-sided shape with a dot Same as the front view

Eraser A rectangle A rectangle A smaller rectangle

Birthday cap A triangle A circle with a dot in the middle A triangle

Why it happens: A round thing such as a bottle or a cap looks the same from the
front and from the side, because every side of it is the same. A chair does not,
because its front and its side are made differently.

Q3 Boxy Buildings: Now, you also collect empty matchboxes or any other empty boxes
to create different buildings and draw their top, side, and front views. You can
challenge your friends by asking them to match your drawing with the right
building.

ANSWER

The building

Front view Back view Top view

Three matchboxes stand in a row and one more sits on the middle box.

Looking from above, the middle box is higher, so the top view has a step in it.

A building made from empty matchboxes and the three views the children drew of it.

This is a making activity. Do it like this.

1. Collect 5 or 6 empty matchboxes.

Page 22

Class 4 Maths Chapter 2 Hide and Seek AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

2. Stand three of them in a row and put one more on top of the middle box. Your building is
ready.
3. Sit in front of it and draw what you see — that is the front view.
4. Go behind it and draw again — that is the back view.
5. Stand up and look straight down and draw — that is the top view.
6. Show only the drawings to a friend and ask her to build the same building.

What you should find:

The front view and the back view have the same shape, but the pictures printed on the
boxes look different.
The top view does not show how tall the building is. It only shows how much floor it covers.
The box sitting on top makes a step in the top view.

Why it happens: Each view shows only the faces turned towards your eyes, so no
single view can tell you everything about the building.

Note: The heading of this section is printed in the book as “Boxy Buldings”. The
correct spelling is Boxy Buildings.

In that row count the desks: first desk, middle desk, third desk.

The third desk is the last one on the right.

A blue water bottle is kept on that desk.

Why it happens: To find a place we need two things — which row, and which desk in
that row. One alone is not enough.

Tip: Put a small cross on that desk in your book, the way the red circle shows it here.

Draw the apple on that desk.

Why it happens: The row number and the desk number together point at exactly
one desk, so everybody in the class draws the apple in the same place.

Try this: Ask a friend to name a desk and you draw a star on it. Then change turns.

The rows are counted from the bottom: Row 1, Row 2, Row 3.

The columns are counted from the left: Column 1, Column 2, Column 3.

Bottom → Row 1. Left → Column 1.

So the ball goes in Row 1, Column 1.

Why it happens: A box in a grid needs two names — its row and its column.
Together they point at one box and no other.

Top → Row 3, because the rows are counted from the bottom.

Right → Column 3. Left → Column 1.

So Row 3 becomes full: pencil, water bottle, eraser.
The ball stays in Row 1, Column 1, and the apple sits alone in Row 2.

Why it happens: “Top” and “bottom” tell us the row; “left” and “right” tell us the
column. Once both are known the box is fixed.

Try this: Draw a 3 by 3 grid on the floor with chalk. Give your friend clues and let him
place stones on it.

Mini’s walk on the grid: first to the right, then left and up.

She reaches the cat.

Mini had first taken 4 steps to the right from START.

1 step → Row 1, Column 1 2 steps → Row 1, Column 2

3 steps → Row 1, Column 3 4 steps → Row 1, Column 4 (the orange)
Now 2 steps to the left: Column 4 → 3 → 2. She is at Row 1, Column 2.

Now 1 step upwards: Row 1 → Row 2. She is at Row 2, Column 2.

Row 2, Column 2 has the cat.

2 steps from the cat

The last two steps of the treasure hunt, drawn on the grid.

Jagat thought of the mango.

Mini is standing on the cat — Row 2, Column 2.

Jagat says, “Now, you are still 2 steps away.”

1 step right → Row 2, Column 3

1 step up → Row 3, Column 3 — and there is the mango.

Check the first clue too: from the orange (Row 1, Column 4) the mango is up, up, left = 3

steps, just as Jagat said.

Why it happens: Each clue cuts down the choices. When only one object is exactly 2
steps away, that must be the one Jagat thought of.

Two different ways of walking from START to the flower.

Here are three ways to say the path in words. Each one is 7 steps long.

1. From the starting point I moved 4 steps right. Then I moved 3 steps up. I reached the
flower.
2. From the starting point I moved 1 step right. Then 3 steps up. Then 3 steps right. I reached
the flower.
3. From the starting point I moved 2 steps right, then 2 steps up, then 2 steps right, then 1

Path 3: 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 7

Why it happens: The three paths look different on the grid, but each one goes right
the same number of times and up the same number of times. That is why the total is
the same.

Try this: Find one more path of your own and write it down. Check that it also adds
up to 7.

red = to the orange blue = to the mango

The shortest way to the orange and the shortest way to the mango.

The orange. It is nearer.

To the orange (Row 1, Column 4):

1 step in, then 3 steps right → 1 + 3 = 4 steps

To the mango (Row 3, Column 3):
1 step in, then 2 steps right, then 2 steps up → 1 + 2 + 2 = 5 steps

4 is less than 5, so the orange is reached in fewer steps.

Why it happens: The orange is in the same row as the starting point, so you never
have to turn upwards. The mango is two rows higher, and every row costs an extra
step.

Q4 Drone Around the School: Circle the places or things that you see in the picture and

What the drone sees when it looks straight down at the school.

ANSWER

What the drone sees when it looks straight down at the school.

The drone flies high up, so the photo is a top view of the school. Circle each place and write its
name.

Page 53

Class 4 Maths Chapter 2 Hide and Seek AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Sample answer — things you can see:

the school buildings, with red brick walls and red roofs
the playground — the big green field
the garden or park, green and square
trees around the school
the road outside the school
the parking, with cars standing in it
the school gate and the boundary wall

Why it happens: From above we see the roofs of the buildings and the shape of the
ground, but not the doors and windows. That is why a drone photo looks like a map.

Tip: Gyan’s friend knows it is her school because of the red brick walls. A special
mark like that helps us recognise a place from above.

Two of the routes from the Grade IV classroom to the stage.

Sample answer: 3 routes. Many more are possible, so your number may be different.

1. Route 1 (red): Grade IV → up the Primary Wing → left along the front of the Middle Wing
classrooms → past the Hall → Stage.
2. Route 2 (blue): Grade IV → down to the path near the Service Lane → left past the Park and
the Entrance → up past the Principal Office → Stage.
3. Route 3: Grade IV → up the Primary Wing to the top → left past the Medical room and the
Sports room → straight across the playground → Stage.

Use a different colour pencil for each route.

Then it is easy to see which line is the shortest.

Why it happens: The school has open ground on many sides, so you can go round
the buildings in more than one way. Each way is a different route to the same place.

Class 4 Maths Chapter 2 Hide and Seek AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

The red route is the shortest — straight along the front of the Middle Wing classrooms and
then past the Hall to the stage.

Red route → 2 turns, and it goes almost straight across the school.

Blue route → it first goes down to the Service Lane, then all the way left, then up again.

Much longer.

Route 3 → it climbs to the top of the map first, so it also goes a longer way round.

How do I know?

I traced each route with a different colour pencil.
Then I ran my finger along each line. The red line was the shortest.
You can also lay a thread on each line and then measure the threads.

Why it happens: A route that goes almost straight from one place to the other is
short. A route that goes down first and comes back up covers the same ground
twice, so it is longer.
