The comic strip on page 183
Soni asks a painter to make her picture. He says he charges ₹200. He
gives her a sheet on which only half of Soni is drawn. He says the other
half is exactly the same, so she should hold a mirror next to it. Soni then
pays him half the money — one ₹100 note — and tells him to hold a mirror
next to the note.

The story o t a

The painter drew only half of Soni but asked for the full ₹200. He said a mirror would show the
other half.
Sample answer: Ask him to draw things whose two halves are not the same, like these.

Why these work: A mirror on the middle of a shoe shows two toes and no heel. So half a
picture of a shoe, a teapot or the letter R is of no use.

Square: 4 small squares, 2 in each row.
Rectangle: 6 small squares, 3 in each row.
Six-sided shape: 1 hexagon and 2 rhombuses.

− Exp anat on
l i

The six-sided shape is longer than a hexagon: its top and bottom sides are twice as long as
its slanting sides. So one hexagon does not fill it. It can also be filled with 2 trapeziums and
2 rhombuses, or with 10 small triangles.

Tip: Move your finger first, not your pencil. If a path stops, go back to the last turn and try

The straight way: stay on the top path to the far right, then go down the right side to the
