NCERT Solutions — Chapter 1: Together We Can
Chapter 1 of Santoor opens Unit 1, My Land. Together We Can is a short poem of ten lines, printed as five
pairs. The book does not name a poet. The poem says one simple thing: a team that stands together is
strong, and helping each other keeps everyone from falling. The rest of the chapter takes that idea into
practice — you talk about your food and festivals, learn the words for groups of things, find places on a map,
write about children helping others, and cut a paper chain of people holding hands.

LET US RECITE

Poem Let us Recite — Together We Can. Read the poem aloud and enjoy it.

Here is the whole poem. Read it aloud twice. The second time, clap softly on every second line.

Page 3

Class 4 English Chapter 1 Together We Can AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Together we stand, strong and tall,

Helping each other, we never fall.

Cheering aloud, we shout and sing,

Teamwork can overcome anything.

Win or lose, we always share,

Our bond of trust is always there.

With each hand joined, the goal is near,

Team spirit fills the air with cheer.

Together we shine, our hearts as one,

For in our team, the joy’s begun!

What each pair of lines says:

1. Lines 1–2. A team that stands together is strong and tall. When friends help each other,
nobody falls.
2. Lines 3–4. The team cheers, shouts and sings. Working together can beat any problem.
3. Lines 5–6. The team shares the win and the loss. Their trust never breaks.
4. Lines 7–8. When every hand joins in, the goal comes near. The air is full of cheer.
5. Lines 9–10. The team shines together. All their hearts want the same thing, so joy begins.

Why the lines sound nice: The poem is written in pairs of rhyming lines. The last
words of each pair sound the same — tall / fall, sing / anything, share / there, near /
cheer, one / begun. Rhyme makes a poem easy to remember.

Tip for reciting: Say the first line of each pair loudly, like a shout. Say the second line
a little softer. Say the last line with a big smile — it is the happiest line of all.

Look at the picture on page 1: Children painted in the Warli style are dancing and
playing in a field. There are huts, a tree and a kite. Everyone is doing something
together — that is what the poem is about.

Let us Think — Page 2
A. Answer the following

LET US THINK

A.1 What happens when you join hands with your team?

When we join hands with our team, our goal comes near. The poem says, “With each hand
joined, the goal is near, / Team spirit fills the air with cheer.”
Three things happen:

We become strong and tall, so we do not fall.
The work gets done faster, because many hands share it.
Everyone feels happy. The poem calls this cheer.

Why it happens: One pair of hands can do only one job at a time. When ten pairs of
hands work together, ten jobs move at once. So the goal comes near much sooner.

A.2 Why is helping each other important?

Helping each other is important because then nobody falls. The poem says, “Helping each
other, we never fall.”
A hard job becomes easy when a friend lends a hand. If I cannot lift a heavy bag, my friend
holds one side. If my friend cannot read a word, I read it for him.
Helping also builds trust. The poem says, “Our bond of trust is always there.” When I help today,
someone will help me tomorrow.

Why it matters: No one is good at everything. Each person is strong in something
different. When we help each other, everybody’s strength is used and nobody is left
behind.

Sample answer: My friend and I can make a chart on birds for our class. I will draw
the birds and he will write their names. Together we can finish it in one day. Alone, it
would take much longer.

Why two are better than one here: Each friend does the part he is good at. The
work is shared, so it is done faster and looks better.

B.3 Have you ever lost a game? How did you feel?

This is your own memory, so write about a real game you played.
How to answer:

1. Name the game and say when you played it.
2. Say how you felt just after losing — sad, angry, like crying. It is all right to say so.
3. Say what you did next, or what you learnt.

Sample answer: Yes, my team lost a kabaddi match on Sports Day. I felt very sad
and I did not want to talk to anyone. Then my friends said we had played well. We
practised harder and won the next match.

What the poem says about this: “Win or lose, we always share, / Our bond of trust
is always there.” A good team stays together after a loss too. Losing does not break
a real team.

B.4 Imagine you are the team leader of a group project, and two of your teammates
disagreed with each other for some reason. What would you do to unite your team
again?

First, listen to both of them. A leader must hear both sides before saying anything.
A good answer should have these steps:

1. Stop the fight calmly. Do not take any side at once.
2. Let each one speak while the other listens quietly.
3. Find what is common. Both of them want the project to be good.
4. Share the work. Give each one the part he or she is best at.

Page 7

Class 4 English Chapter 1 Together We Can AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

5. Remind them of the goal and ask them to shake hands.

Sample answer: I would first ask both of them to sit down and stop shouting. Then I
would let each one say what the problem is. I would tell them that we all want the
same thing — a good project. I would give one friend the drawing work and the
other the writing work. Then I would ask them to shake hands and start again.

Why this works: Most fights happen because each person feels unheard. When
both get a turn to speak, the anger comes down. After that, a shared goal pulls the
team back together.

Let us Speak — Pages 2–3

LET US SPEAK

S.1 Read what Bokali and Darsana are saying. Turn to your friend sitting beside you

The two speech bubbles printed on page 2 of your book.

This is a speaking activity. You do it with the friend sitting next to you.
What to do:

Page 8

Class 4 English Chapter 1 Together We Can AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

1. Read Bokali’s words aloud. Your friend reads Darsana’s words aloud.
2. Now change turns. You read Darsana’s words and your friend reads Bokali’s.
3. Then talk in your own words about your favourite food and your favourite festival.
4. Listen when your friend speaks. Do not talk at the same time.

What a good talk has: the name of the food, the name of the festival, and two or three lines
about each.

Sample conversation:
You: Hello, I am Ravi. My favourite food is idli with coconut chutney.
Friend: I like idli too! My favourite food is chhole bhature.
You: My favourite festival is Pongal. We cook sweet rice and draw a big kolam.
Friend: Mine is Bihu. We dance, sing and eat pitha.
You: Our foods and festivals are different, but we are both from Bharat.

What Bokali and Darsana mean: Our country has many traditions, foods, festivals
and languages. They are all different. Still we live as one. That is what the word unity
means.

S.2 Hello, I am .............................................................................. .
My favourite food is ............................................................. .

Fill each blank with your own true answer. Here is what goes in each one.

THE LINE WHAT TO WRITE

Why herd: Animals that eat grass in a group — sheep, cows, goats, buffaloes,
elephants — move about together. English calls such a group a herd.

Did you know? Many people also say a flock of sheep, and that is correct English too.
But flock is not in the word box here, so the answer for this blank is herd.

Your own sentence: A herd of sheep was crossing the village road.

Why pack: Wolves hunt as a team. They stay in one family group all their lives.
English calls such a hunting group a pack. We also say a pack of dogs and a pack of
hounds.

Link to our poem: Wolves are a good example of “Teamwork can overcome
anything.” One wolf alone cannot catch a big animal. The pack can.

Your own sentence: A pack of wolves ran across the snow.

arranged like this are a bouquet.

Page 13

Class 4 English Chapter 1 Together We Can AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why bouquet: A bouquet is not just any group of flowers. It is flowers cut, put
together neatly and tied, so that they can be given as a gift.

Tip — how to say it: bouquet is said as “boo-kay”. The last t is silent.

Your own sentence: We gave a bouquet of flowers to our Principal.

A.5 A. Look at the picture and fill in the blank, by using a word from the box.

5. a ................................ of trees

The picture printed beside item 5 on page 4: many leafy trees growing close together.

a grove of trees
The picture shows several leafy trees growing close together. A small group of trees like this is a
grove.

Why grove: A grove is a small group of trees, often of the same kind, planted or
growing together. A very large one would be called a forest.

grove, a bamboo grove.

Your own sentence: There is a mango grove behind my grandmother’s house.

6. a ................................ of bees

The picture printed beside item 6 on page 4: many bees flying around their hive.

a swarm of bees
The picture shows many bees flying around their hive. A big moving group of bees is a swarm.

Why swarm: A swarm means a large number of small creatures moving together in
the air. We use it for bees, flies, locusts and mosquitoes.

Do You Know (page 4): Honeybees use a waggle dance to talk to the other bees in
their hive. By dancing, one bee tells the rest exactly where to find flowers with
nectar, pollen or water. Ants also work as a team. They use signals to find food,
guard their home and build big nests.

ring holds all the keys at one point, so it is a bunch.

Tip: We also say a bunch of bananas, a bunch of grapes and a bunch of flowers. All
of them hang from one place.

Find the school — it is the long building with the dark red roof, in the middle of the map. Now
look above it. The bank, with the green roof, is drawn higher up, with a road in between.

Why “behind”: Whatever is drawn higher up in such a picture is farther away from
us. The bank is higher than the school, so it is behind the school.

Tip — a pair to remember: behind and in front of are opposites. The bank is behind
the school, so the school is in front of the bank.

There is an ambulance between the post office and the hospital.
The white van with the red cross is standing on the road. The hospital is above that road. The
post office is below it. So the ambulance has one building on each side.

Why “between”: We use between when something has two things, one on either

between is the only word that fits.

LET US WRITE

W.1 A. Look at the pictures and answer the questions given below.
1. What is Lubang doing, to help his injured friend, and what will they do next?

Picture 1 (page 6) — what it shows: Two boys are outdoors on a path.
The boy on the left wears a blue shirt and red shorts. His face looks
sad and he is limping. A stone lies on the ground behind him. The boy
on the right wears an orange t-shirt and purple trousers. He has put
one arm around his friend’s shoulder and is holding him up. His other
hand points forward.

A short description of picture 1, because the book prints it as a painting.

Lubang is holding his injured friend up and helping him walk. He has put one arm around
his friend’s shoulder so that his friend does not fall.
What they will do next: They will walk slowly to the school first-aid room. There, the teacher
will clean the hurt and put a bandage on it.

Page 24

Class 4 English Chapter 1 Together We Can AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Model written answer: Lubang’s friend has fallen and hurt his leg. Lubang has put
his arm around him and is helping him to walk. Next, they will go to the teacher, and
the hurt will be cleaned and bandaged.

Why we use “will”: The picture shows what is happening now. The second part of
the question asks about what has not happened yet. For that we use will — they will
go, the teacher will put a bandage.

2. What are Obang, Manya and Tina doing, and what will they do next?

Picture 2 (page 6) — what it shows: Three children are in their
classroom. A boy in a yellow shirt and red shorts is dropping waste
paper into a green dustbin. A girl in an orange top and red skirt is
standing on her toes and wiping the window glass with a cloth. A
third girl, in the same orange top and red skirt, is putting a blue
book into an open wooden cupboard that already holds a green
book.

A short description of picture 2, because the book prints it as a painting.

Obang, Manya and Tina are cleaning their classroom together. Each one has taken up a
different job.

One is putting waste paper into the green dustbin.
One is wiping the window glass with a cloth.
One is keeping the books neatly in the cupboard.

What they will do next: They will finish their jobs and wash their hands. Then they will sit down
in a clean, tidy classroom.

Model written answer: Obang, Manya and Tina are cleaning their classroom. One is
throwing the waste into the dustbin, one is cleaning the window and one is
arranging the books. Next, they will finish the work, wash their hands and sit in a
neat classroom.

W.4 4. What are Zakir, Gulpreet, and Gilashree doing, and what will they do next?

Picture 4 (page 6) — what it shows: Three children sit around a round
table. A boy in a striped t-shirt is on the left, a girl with plaits and a
yellow top is in the middle, and a girl in a green top sits on the right
in a wheelchair. A big sheet of paper is spread on the table. Paint
pots, brushes and a cup of water are on it, and colours have already
been put on the paper.

A short description of picture 4, because the book prints it as a painting.

Zakir, Gulpreet and Gilashree are making a picture together at one table. They are sharing
the paints, the brushes and the same big sheet of paper.
What they will do next: They will finish the picture and let it dry. Then they will show it to their
teacher and put it up on the class board.

Model written answer: Zakir, Gulpreet and Gilashree are sitting around a table and
painting one big picture together. They are sharing the colours and brushes. Next,
they will finish it and show it to their teacher.

What this picture teaches: One of the three friends uses a wheelchair. She is
working at the same table as the others. A good team makes room for everyone.

W.5 5. What are the students doing, and what will the teacher do next?

Picture 5 (page 6) — what it shows: A classroom. The teacher stands
on the left in a yellow saree and holds an open book. The children sit
at wooden desks in white shirts and red dresses. Many of them have
one hand raised high in the air, and they are smiling.

A short description of picture 5, because the book prints it as a painting.

The students are raising their hands to answer the teacher’s question. They are sitting at
their desks and smiling, because they know the answer.
What the teacher will do next: She will choose one student and ask him or her to answer.

Model written answer: The teacher is standing with an open book and has asked a
question. The students are raising their hands to answer it. Next, the teacher will call
one student and listen to the answer.

Why we raise a hand: If everyone speaks at once, nobody can be heard. Raising a
hand lets the class take turns. That is the same turn-taking you practised in Let us
Speak.

Tip for all five answers: Write two sentences. In the first, tell what is happening
now. Use is or are with an -ing word — is helping, are cleaning. In the second, use will
for what happens next.

A. Working Together · B. Paste a picture of what you have created

LET US DO

D.A A. Working Together — Create your symbol for togetherness by following the
simple steps given below and paste a picture of what you have created in the box.
Materials required: Plain paper, Pencil/pen, crayons/any sketch pens and scissors.
1. Take a sheet of paper and fold it this way. 2. Draw one side of a body including
head, neck, hand, dress, leg, and shoe. (You can draw a boy or a girl). 3. Cut the
paper along the drawing with scissors. 4. Unfold the paper gently. 5. Colour it based
on your choice with crayons or sketch pens.

fold

1. Fold like a fan 2. Draw half a body 3. Cut it out
hand on the fold

The first three steps as the book shows them: the sheet folded like a fan, half a body
drawn on the folded strip with the hand reaching the folded edge, and the shape cut
out through all the layers. Steps 4 and 5 are yours to do — unfold it gently and colour it.

This is a making activity. Do it with your own hands. Here are the five steps, made clear.

1. Fold. Take a plain sheet. Fold it in half, then in half again, and again — always the same way,
like a hand fan. You will get one narrow strip with many layers.
2. Draw. On the top layer, draw one half of a child. Draw half the head, the neck and one arm.
Then draw half the dress, one leg and one shoe. The hand must touch the folded edge. This
is the most important point.
3. Cut. Hold all the layers together and cut along your drawing. Do not cut the folded edge
where the hand touches it. Ask an elder to help you with the scissors.
4. Unfold. Open the paper gently. You will get a row of children joined at the hands.

Page 29

Class 4 English Chapter 1 Together We Can AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

5. Colour. Colour each child with crayons or sketch pens. You may give each one a different
dress.

What the paper looks like after step 4, when you unfold it. The dotted lines show where the paper
was folded.

What a correct result looks like: a row of paper children, all the same size, joined hand to
hand, made from one single sheet.

Why the hands must touch the fold: The fold is the only part you do not cut. It is
the bit of paper that keeps the figures joined. If you cut right across the fold, the
children fall apart into separate pieces.

Why this is a symbol of togetherness: Every child in the chain is holding the next
one’s hand. Not one of them can be taken away without breaking the chain. That is
exactly what the poem says — “With each hand joined”.

Check it yourself: Count the folds you made. The number of children you get is the
same as the number of layers you cut through.

D.B B. Paste a picture of what you have created.

Stick your paper chain (or a photograph of it) in the empty box on page 8.

Lines 3–4 — teamwork is powerful. “Cheering aloud, we shout and sing, / Teamwork can
overcome anything.” The team cheers, shouts and sings. Working together can beat any
problem.
Lines 5–6 — win or lose, we share. “Win or lose, we always share, / Our bond of trust is
always there.” A real team shares the joy of winning and the sadness of losing. Their trust
does not break.
Lines 7–8 — joined hands bring the goal near. “With each hand joined, the goal is near, /
Team spirit fills the air with cheer.” When every hand joins in, the work is soon done, and
everyone feels happy.
Lines 9–10 — one heart. “Together we shine, our hearts as one, / For in our team, the joy’s
begun!” The team shines together because all hearts want the same thing.
The rest of the chapter. Let us Think asks about teamwork. Let us Speak is a talk about your
favourite food and festival. Let us Learn teaches group words (a herd, a swarm, a bunch) and
place words (behind, between, near, in front of). Let us Write has five pictures of children
helping others. Let us Do is a paper chain of people holding hands.
