23 24 25 26 27 28

The two February pages of the calendar, exactly as the book prints them.

Look at the last date printed in each calendar page.

Number of days in Feb 2024 = 29

Number of days in Feb 2025 = 28

29 − 28 = 1 extra day in 2024

So February 2024 had 29 days and February 2025 had 28 days.

Why it happens: 2024 is a leap year. In a leap year February gets one extra day, so it
ends on 29 instead of 28.

Tip: Parv says he was born on 29 February 2016. That date comes only in a leap year,
so his birthday falls once in four years.

Q4 Write the names of the months when you celebrate your favourite festivals. (Name
of the Festival / Name of the Month)

ANSWER

This one you fill from your own year. Do it like this:

1. Write down four or five festivals your family celebrates.
2. Find each festival on this year’s calendar.
3. Write the name of the month in which that date falls.

Sample answer:

NAME OF THE FESTIVAL NAME OF THE MONTH

Pongal / Makar Sankranti January

Holi March

Raksha Bandhan August

Diwali October or November

Christmas December

Tip: A few festivals, such as Id and Guru Nanak Jayanti, follow the moon. Their
month changes a little every year, so look them up on this year’s calendar.

Sample answer: Suppose today is Wednesday.

QUESTION DAY

a) Today Wednesday

b) Yesterday Tuesday

c) Tomorrow Thursday

d) Day after tomorrow Friday

e) Day before yesterday Monday

Why it happens: The seven days come in a fixed ring — Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday — and then Sunday again. So you only have
to step round the ring.

Q6 July 1 is a Monday. Write the dates for the next two Mondays.
___________________________________________

ANSWER

A week has 7 days, so the next Monday comes 7 days later.

1+7=8

8 + 7 = 15

The next two Mondays are July 8 and July 15.

28 29 30 31

July with 1 on a Monday. The next two Mondays are ringed.

Why it happens: Every column of a calendar holds one weekday. Going straight
down a column means adding 7 each time.

Tip: The Mondays of that July are 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 — all seven apart.

Q7 Laali is born on 04/07/2014 and Chotu is born on 04/12/2019. Who is older among
the two and how much? Laali will turn 5 years old on ______________. Chotu’s 10th
birthday will be celebrated on ________________.

ANSWER

Both dates are in DD/MM/YYYY form. So Laali was born on 4 July 2014 and Chotu on 4 December
2019.
Who is older? The one born earlier is older, and 2014 comes before 2019. So Laali is older.

From 4 July 2014 to 4 July 2019 → 5 years

From 4 July 2019 to 4 December 2019 → July, August, September, October, November → 5

months

Laali is older by 5 years 5 months

Laali will turn 5 years old on 04/07/2019 (4 July 2019).

Page 9

Class 4 Maths Chapter 12 Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Birth year 2014 + 5 = 2019, same day and month → 04/07/2019

Chotu’s 10th birthday will be celebrated on 04/12/2029 (4 December 2029).

Birth year 2019 + 10 = 2029, same day and month → 04/12/2029

Why it happens: A birthday comes back on the same day and the same month every
year, so only the year number changes.

Tip: Both children were born on the 4th, so you only have to compare the month and
the year.

Q8 Check the manufacturing and expiry dates on the wrapper of any biscuit packet. a)
How old is the packet of biscuits? Answer: ____ months ____ days. b) How many more
days are the biscuits safe to eat? Answer: ____ months ____ days.

ANSWER

Do it with a real packet:

1. Find MFG (the making date) and EXP (the last safe date) on the wrapper.
2. For part a), count from the MFG date up to today.
3. For part b), count from today up to the EXP date.
4. Count whole months first, then the leftover days.

Sample answer: Say the wrapper shows MFG 15/05/2025 and EXP 15/11/2025, and
today is 20/08/2025.

a) 15 May → 15 August = 3 months, then 15 August → 20 August = 5 days

The packet is 3 months 5 days old.

b) 20 August → 20 October = 2 months

20 October → 31 October = 11 days, then 11 + 15 = 26 days

The biscuits are safe for 2 months 26 days more.

Names of the months in other calendars

Q1 Find out when the year begins in each of these calendars.

ANSWER

Ask at home or look at a panchang or a wall calendar. Different calendars start the year on
different days.

Sample answer:

CALENDAR THE YEAR BEGINS ON AROUND THIS ENGLISH
MONTH

Hindu (Vikram Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Gudi Padwa, March or April
Samvat) Ugadi)

Islamic (Hijri) 1 Muharram moves back about 11 days every
year

Sikh (Nanakshahi) 1 Chet 14 March

Tamil Puthandu, 1 Chithirai 14 April

Bengali Pohela Boishakh 14 or 15 April

Why it happens: The English calendar follows the Sun, so its New Year is fixed on 1
January. The Islamic calendar follows the Moon only, so its New Year keeps sliding
earlier.

Q2 Check how the names of the months in these calenders correspond to the months
in the English calendar.

ANSWER

Put the two lists side by side and see which English months each one covers.

Page 12

Class 4 Maths Chapter 12 Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Sample answer:

HINDU MONTH FALLS IN HINDU MONTH FALLS IN

Chaitra March–April Ashwin September–October

Vaishakh April–May Kartik October–November

Jyeshtha May–June Margashirsha November–December

Ashadh June–July Paush December–January

Shravan July–August Magh January–February

Bhadrapad August–September Phalgun February–March

Each of these months sits across two English months, not inside one. The Islamic months
(Muharram, Safar, Rabi-ul-Awwal, …) do not stay with the same English month at all.

Why it happens: These months are counted from one new moon to the next, which
is about 29 or 30 days. That does not match the English months, which have 28 to 31
days and are counted from the Sun.

Q3 Identify the months from the Hindu/Islamic/Sikh or any other calendar in which
some of the important festivals of the community fall.

ANSWER

Take the festivals your family keeps and find the month each one falls in.

Page 13

Class 4 Maths Chapter 12 Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Sample answer:

FESTIVAL MONTH OF THE COMMUNITY CALENDAR

Holi Phalgun (full moon)

Raksha Bandhan Shravan (full moon)

Janmashtami Bhadrapad

Diwali Kartik (new moon)

Guru Nanak Jayanti Kartik (full moon)

Baisakhi 1 Vaisakh

Id-ul-Fitr 1 Shawwal

Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) 10 Zil-Hijjah

Tip: Notice how many festivals sit on a full moon or a new moon day. That is why
their English date changes every year.

Q4 Identify the dates of the new moon and full moon in your community’s calendar
every month. Do you notice any pattern?

ANSWER

Mark the new moon and the full moon of three months on the calendar, then look at the gaps.
The pattern: a new moon and the next full moon are about 15 days apart, and the next new
moon comes about 15 days after that.

New moon → full moon = about 15 days

Full moon → next new moon = about 15 days

15 + 15 = about 30 days → one moon month

Sample answer: In one month you will find one new moon and one full moon,
roughly a fortnight apart — for example new moon on 1 and full moon on 16.

Page 14

Class 4 Maths Chapter 12 Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why it happens: The Moon takes about 29 or 30 days to go from one new moon to
the next. Half of that time it is growing and half of that time it is shrinking.

Q5 How are the full moon or new moon days named in your community’s calendar?

ANSWER

They have their own names, and many festivals are named after them.

The full moon day is called Purnima (Poornima).
The new moon day is called Amavasya.

Sample answer:

DAY NAME IN THE MONTH WHAT HAPPENS

Full moon Guru Purnima (Ashadh) teachers are honoured

Full moon Sharad Purnima (Ashwin) the brightest autumn moon

Full moon Kartik Purnima Guru Nanak Jayanti

New moon Kartik Amavasya Diwali

New moon Mahalaya Amavasya before Navratri

Tip: In Tamil the full moon is called Pournami and the new moon Amavasai. Ask at
home what they are called in your language.

Check it yourself: Add up the nine parts of the doctor’s day: 2 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1
+ 2 + 8 = 24. The same answer.

Why it happens: A clock face shows only 12 hours. In one full day the hour hand
goes round it twice, so a day has 12 + 12 = 24 hours.

3:00 PM _______

5:20 PM _______

_______ 20:00 hours

11:45 PM 23:45 hours

The table printed on page 180.

Here is what the table shows.

The AM/PM way uses only the numbers 1 to 12, and then adds AM or PM to say which half of
the day it is.
The digital clock way uses the numbers 0 to 23, so it needs no AM and no PM.
For every morning time the two numbers are the same — 3:00 AM is 3:00 hours, 7:15 AM is
7:15 hours.
Midnight is the one morning time that changes: 12:00 AM becomes 00:00 hours.
After 12 noon you add 12 to the hour: 1:00 PM becomes 13:00 hours, 11:45 PM becomes
23:45 hours.
The minutes never change. Only the hour number changes.

Why it happens: A day has 24 hours but a clock face has only 12 numbers. AM and
PM tell us which round of the 12 we are in; the digital clock counts straight on from 0
to 23 instead.

Tip: AM means the time from midnight to noon, and PM means the time from noon
to midnight. 8:00 AM is breakfast time; 8:00 PM is dinner time.

Hours and minutes

Q1 Raghav brings milk from the market every morning. Raghav leaves home at 8:20
AM and returns back at 8:35 AM. How much time has he taken? ________

ANSWER

11 12 1 11 12 1
10 2 10 2
9 3 9 3
8 4 8 4
7 6 5 7 6 5

8:20 8:35

The two clocks printed beside Raghav — when he leaves and when he comes back.

The hour is 8 on both clocks, so only the minutes have changed.

From 8:20 to 8:30 = 10 minutes

From 8:30 to 8:35 = 5 minutes

10 + 5 = 15 minutes

Raghav has taken 15 minutes.

Why it happens: On the first clock the long hand is on 4 and on the second clock it is
on 7. It has moved past three big marks, and each big mark is 5 minutes: 5 + 5 + 5 =
15.

Tip: 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour.

BLANK TIME

Reaches school at 8:15 AM

Finishes school assembly 8:30 AM

Dance practice ends at 8:50 AM

Break ends at 9:00 AM

Check it yourself: Add all the minutes together: 15 + 15 + 20 + 10 = 60 minutes. That
is exactly 1 hour, so Akira ends at 9:00 AM, one hour after 8:00 AM.

Why it happens: Whenever the minutes reach 60 they become one full hour, so 8:50
+ 10 minutes is written as 9:00 and not as 8:60.

Observe the shaded portions

Q1 Akira has spent one hour from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. / No, she has spent 60 minutes.
Who do you think is correct? Is there any relation between 1 hour and 60 minutes?

ANSWER

Akira has spent one hour No, she has spent
from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. 60 minutes.

What the two girls say about the time from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

Both girls are correct. They are saying the same thing in two different ways.

1 hour = 60 minutes

11 12 1 11 12 1
10 2 10 2
9 3 9 3
8 4 8 4
7 6 5 7 6 5

8:00 AM 9:00 AM

From 8:00 to 9:00 the long hand goes once all the way round the face.

From 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM the short hand moves from 8 to 9 — that is 1 hour. In the same time
the long hand goes once all the way round and crosses all 60 small marks — that is 60 minutes.

Why it happens: The clock face has 60 small marks in one full round. The long hand
crosses one mark every minute, so one full round is 60 minutes, and one full round
is exactly the time the short hand needs to move from one number to the next.

Quarter or 1/4 of an hour = 15 minutes

Three Quarters or 3/4 of an hour = ____ minutes

The four shaded clock faces printed on page 182.

The whole face is 60 minutes. Share those 60 minutes into equal parts.

Page 34

Class 4 Maths Chapter 12 Ticking Clocks and Turning Calendar AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Half hour: 60 in 2 equal parts → 30 + 30 = 60 → Half hour = 30 minutes

Quarter hour: 60 in 4 equal parts → 15 + 15 + 15 + 15 = 60 → one part = 15 minutes

Three quarters: 15 + 15 + 15 = 45 minutes

Quarter hour = 15 minutes

11 12 1
10 2
9 3
8 4
7 6 5

Three quarters = 45 minutes

The same four faces with both blanks filled in.

So half an hour = 30 minutes and three quarters of an hour = 45 minutes.

Why it happens: The shaded part of the second clock is exactly half the face, and
half of 60 is 30. The fourth clock is shaded from 12 right round to 9, which is three of
the four quarters.

Check it yourself: 30 + 15 = 45, and 45 + 15 = 60. The quarters fit together to make
the whole hour.
