Q1 Write a letter to a friend and post it.

Here is how to write the letter and post it.

1. Take a clean sheet of paper. Write the date in the top right corner.
2. Begin with Dear … and your friend’s name.
3. Write four or five lines of your own news. Then ask about your friend.
4. End with Your friend, and sign your name below it.
5. Fold the letter and put it in an envelope.
6. Write your friend’s full address with the PIN code in the middle of the envelope. Write your
own address on the back.
7. Stick a postage stamp in the top right corner.
8. Drop the envelope into the red postbox.

What happens next. The postman opens the postbox and takes the letters to the post office.
There the letters are sorted region by region. Then they are sent to their destinations. Your
letter reaches your friend in a few days.

Sample answer:
7 August 2026

Dear Ritu,
How are you? I am well. Our school library got new picture books this week. I read
one about a girl who draws maps.
My grandfather and I came home by bus yesterday. We saw a red postbox on the
corner. That is why I am writing to you!
Please write back and tell me about your new school.

Your friend,
Navya

Why it works: every letter has an address, so the post office knows exactly where to
send it.

Q2 Teacher can take students on a field trip to a post office, to explore various
activities that take place there.

On the visit, watch what each person at the post office does. Then write it down.

1. Carry a small notebook and a pencil.
2. Stand quietly at the counter and watch for a few minutes.
3. Ask the postmaster one or two polite questions.
4. Write down everything you saw before you forget it.

Things you will see at a post office

A counter where stamps are sold.
A weighing machine for parcels.
A rubber seal that stamps the date on each letter.
Racks or bags in which letters are sorted, place by place.
Postmen sorting letters for their own area.
A speed post and parcel counter.
A money order form and a savings counter.

Page 4

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Sample answer: We visited the post office near our school. The clerk sold us a
stamp for five rupees. He weighed a parcel on a machine and wrote the cost on it. A
postman was putting letters into different bags. Each bag had the name of a place
on it. The postmaster told us that the post office also sends money by money order.

Why it matters: a post office does much more than carry letters. It sends parcels,
documents and even money.

Q1 Have you or your family members ever sent, or received a letter or a parcel?

This answer comes from your own home, so find it out first.

1. Ask your parents or grandparents if they have ever posted a letter or a parcel.
2. Ask what was inside and who it was for.
3. Look for old letters, envelopes, stamps or parcel receipts kept in the house.
4. Write your answer in two or three sentences.

A good answer tells four things: who sent it, what was sent, when it was sent, and how it
came.

Sample answer: Yes. Last Diwali my aunt in Jaipur sent us a parcel of sweets and a
card. The postman brought it to our door and my mother signed for it. My
grandfather also showed me an old letter his brother wrote to him long ago.

Q2 How does the post office help people stay connected with each other?

The post office carries our words and our things from one place to another.

The postman collects the letters we drop in the postbox.
He takes them to the post office.
There the letters are sorted according to regions.

DISCUSS

Q1 Letters took a long time to reach other persons. How do you think it affected
communication between people in the past?

News reached people very late, so everything moved slowly.

A letter took days, and a reply took many weeks. Dada ji says so himself.
By the time an answer came, the news was already old.
Urgent news, like an illness, could not be sent in time.
People wrote long letters, because they could not write again soon.
They learned to wait patiently, and they kept the letters carefully.

Page 7

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why it happened: the letter itself had to travel by train or by bus. It could not move
faster than the vehicle carrying it.

Q2 How is it different from the way people communicate now?

Today a message reaches in seconds, so we talk far more often.

THEN NOW

A letter took days or weeks. A message goes in seconds.

You wrote once a month. You can write many times a day.

You could only read the words. On a video call you see the face and hear the voice.

You needed paper, a stamp and a postbox. You need only a phone and the internet.

One thing has been lost, though. Dada ji says he misses the joy of writing and receiving a
handwritten letter.

Q3 Today quick messages make sharing the news easier, but sometimes wrong
information spreads very quickly too. How can we ensure the news we share is
true?

Check the news first, and only then share it.

1. Ask who sent it. Do you know that person well?
2. Look for the same news in a newspaper, on television or on a government website.
3. Look at the date. Old news is often sent again as if it were new.
4. Ask an elder or a teacher if you are not sure.
5. If you cannot check it, do not forward it.

Why this matters: a wrong message travels as fast as a true one. It can frighten
people or make them do the wrong thing.

Page 8

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Remember: forwarding is not proof. A message being on your phone does not
make it true.

Q1 Which mode of transportation do you use the most?

This is about your own travel, so look at your own week first.

1. Think of the trips you make — to school, to the market, to a friend’s house.
2. Count how many of them you make on foot, by cycle, by bus, by e-rickshaw, by metro or by
car.
3. The one you use most often is your answer.
4. Add one line saying why you use it most.

Sample answer: I use the school bus the most. I go to school in it six days a week. It
is the cheapest way for me, and my friends travel in it too.

Tip: walking counts as a mode of travel. Many children use it the most without
noticing.

Page 12

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

PEOPLE ROLE IN THE HOSPITAL/HEALTH CENTRE

Doctor Treats patients and prescribes medicines.

Nurse Looks after patients, gives them medicines and injections, and dresses wounds.

Lab technician Tests blood and other samples and gives the report to the doctor.

Pharmacist Gives out the medicines written on the doctor’s slip.

Receptionist Writes down the patient’s name and gives the card for meeting the doctor.

Ward attendant Helps patients move from one room to another and carries them on a stretcher.

Ambulance driver Brings very sick or hurt people to the hospital quickly.

Cleaning staff Keeps the rooms and beds clean, so that illness does not spread.

Why so many people are needed: a doctor alone cannot do everything. Treating a
patient needs tests, medicines, care and cleanliness together.

Note about the book: the printed question reads “the people who works”. It should
be “the people who work”, because “people” is plural.

Sample answer: I would send the money by phone. Mama ji sent money to my
mother that way for Raksha Bandhan, and it reached in seconds. But if I had to send
money to my great-grandmother in the village, I would use a Money Order. She has
no smartphone, and the postman gives her the cash at home.

Q1 If you get pocket money, do you save it? If yes, where do you put your savings?

Answer about yourself, in two or three sentences.

1. Say whether you get pocket money, and how much.
2. Say whether you save any of it.
3. Say where you keep the saved money.

Common places children keep savings: a piggy bank, a tin box, an envelope given to a parent,
or a children’s savings account in a bank.

Sample answer: Yes, I get twenty rupees a week. I keep ten rupees in my piggy
bank and spend the rest. Once the piggy bank is full, my mother puts the money in
my bank account.

Page 14

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why a bank is safest: money in a bank cannot be lost or stolen, and the bank adds
a little more to it every year.

Q2 Why do you think it is important to save money?

We save so that we have money when we need it later.

Some things cost more than a week’s pocket money. Saving lets us buy them.
Sudden needs come up — a doctor’s visit, a broken cycle, a school trip.
Saved money helps the family in a hard month.
Saving teaches us to decide what we really need.

Dada ji says the same thing in the chapter: banks keep money safe and also help us save money
for our future needs.

Why it works: a small amount kept aside each week grows into a big amount. Ten
rupees a week becomes five hundred and twenty rupees in a year.

Q3 What are some things you could do to save more money?

Save more by spending a little less, and by keeping the saving as a habit.

1. Decide on the first day how much you will save. Put it away before you spend anything.
2. Carry water and a snack from home instead of buying them.
3. Walk or cycle for short distances instead of taking a ride.
4. Before buying something, wait a day. You may find you did not want it.
5. Take care of your things. A pen that is not lost need not be bought again.
6. Put the coins that are left over at the end of the week into your piggy bank.

Why saving first works best: if you save what is left at the end, usually nothing is
left.

Q1 Visit a bank in your locality or find out from your elders about how it works. After
that, answer the following questions: (a) Other than saving money, what else do
people use banks for? (b) What is an ATM and how does it help people?

(a) Other than saving money, people use banks to:

send money to someone else, by phone or at the counter;
take a loan to build a house, buy a vehicle or run a shop;
keep money in a fixed deposit, on which the bank gives extra money;
keep gold and important papers safe in a locker;
get a cheque book and an ATM card;
pay electricity, water and school bills;
receive a salary or a pension every month.

Page 17

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

(b) What an ATM is. ATM is short for Automated Teller Machine. It is a machine kept at or near a
bank. You put in your ATM card and press your secret number, called a PIN. The machine then
gives you the cash you ask for.
How it helps people

It gives money at any time, day or night, even on a holiday.
You need not stand in a long queue inside the bank.
You can use it in another city too.
It also shows how much money is left in the account.

Dada ji says it simply: “It helps us take out money anytime we need it.” When he was Navya’s age
there were no ATMs, so people had to visit the bank and wait in long queues.

Q2 Take an Indian currency note. Look at it closely and answer the following questions:
(a) What is the value of the note? (b) How many languages do you see on the note?
(c) What pictures or symbols are there on the note?

Take a real note from an elder, look at both sides, and then write your answer. The sample below
is for a ₹ 100 note.
(a) The value of the note. It is the number printed in the corners, with the rupee sign ₹ before
it. Your answer will be ₹ 10, ₹ 20, ₹ 50, ₹ 100, ₹ 200 or ₹ 500, depending on the note you have
taken.
(b) The languages. The value is written in Hindi and English on the front. On the back there is a
language panel with 15 more Indian languages. So the value is written in 17 languages in all.
(c) The pictures and symbols.

ON THE FRONT ON THE BACK

Picture of Mahatma Gandhi Picture of a famous Indian monument

The four lions of the Ashoka Pillar The language panel

The rupee sign ₹ and the value in numbers and words The Swachh Bharat mark

The Reserve Bank of India seal and the Governor’s signature The year the note was printed

A shiny thread running down the note The Ashoka Pillar mark again

Sample answer: My note is of ₹ 100. Its value is written in 17 languages. On the
front there is Mahatma Gandhi, the Ashoka Pillar lions and the RBI seal. On the back
there is a stepwell called Rani ki Vav.

Page 18

Why so many languages: people in every part of India must be able to read the
value of the note.

Tip: the picture on the back changes from note to note. The Red Fort is on the ₹ 500
note, the Sanchi Stupa on the ₹ 200 note and the Sun Temple of Konark on the ₹ 10
note.

Q2 Look at the picture on the next page, and imagine your school at the centre. Name
the buildings or areas near your school and write the direction they are situated in
the given spaces.

The picture printed on the next page: your school in the middle, with a blank space in
each of the four directions.

This is about your own school, so first find out which way is which.

1. Stand outside your school gate in the morning and face the rising sun. You are now facing
east.
2. North is then on your left, south on your right and west behind you.
3. Look around and name one place you can see in each direction.
4. Write each name in the box on that side of the school.

Sample answer — the same picture with four places filled in.

Why the sun helps: the sun always rises in the east. Once you know east, the other
three directions follow at once.

Tip: your answer will be different from this one, because your school stands in a
different place. Just be sure each place really is on that side.

Q3 Imagine you are giving directions to a friend to visit your favourite place near your
school. How would you explain it using directions (left, right, forward, backward,
etc.) and landmarks? Place: ___________ Instruction: ___________

Good directions have two things in every step: which way to turn and a landmark to look for.

Page 23

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

1. Start from a place your friend already knows, such as the school gate.
2. Give one step at a time. Say how far to go and what to look for.
3. Name a landmark at every turn — a big tree, a temple, a red postbox, a bus stop.
4. End by saying what the place looks like, so your friend knows it on sight.

Sample answer:
Place: The public park near my school.
Instruction: Come out of the school gate and turn right. Walk straight past the
bakery. At the red postbox on the corner, turn left. Walk forward till you see the bus
stop. The park is just behind the bus stop. It has a big neem tree and a blue gate.

Why landmarks matter: road names are hard to find, but a big tree or a postbox
can be seen from far. A landmark tells your friend that they are on the right path.

Activity 4 — Page 30
Looking Around the Neighbourhood

ACTIVITY

Q1 Draw a map showing the route from your school to the public library or any such
place near your school. Identify landmarks like parks, shops, hospitals, bus stops,
etc. on the map.

Draw the roads first, then put the places on them.

1. Mark your school near one edge of the box. Draw it as a small square.
2. Draw the road that goes out of the school gate as a thick line.
3. Draw every turn the road takes on the way to the library.
4. Put the library at the end of the route.
5. Now add the landmarks you pass — a park, a shop, a hospital, a bus stop.
6. Draw a dotted line with an arrow along the route, from the school to the library.
7. Write the name next to every place you draw.

Sample answer — a route map from the school to the public library, with landmarks marked on the
way.

Why a map helps: a map shows everything at one glance. A person who has never
been there can still find the way.

Tip: keep the top of your paper as north, the way Navya did. Then anyone can use
your map.

Why save first: if you put the ₹ 40 into the piggy bank on the first day, it stays there.
If you wait till the end of the month, it is usually gone.

Tip: your amounts can be different from these. Just check that savings and
expenditure together make exactly ₹ 100.

Q2 Imagine that your group is in charge of making your neighbourhood better. Discuss
what new services or facilities you would add or improve. Present how these
changes would help everyone in the community.

Work in your group like this.

1. Walk around your neighbourhood and note what is missing or broken.
2. Each member names one change they want.
3. Choose three changes that would help the largest number of people.
4. For each change, say clearly who it helps and how.
5. Draw a poster or a simple map of your neighbourhood showing the changes.

Sample answer:

CHANGE WE WOULD MAKE HOW IT HELPS EVERYONE

Put dustbins at every corner and have the The streets stay clean and people fall ill less often.
garbage taken away daily

Repair the street lights Children, women and old people can walk safely
after dark.

Make a small park with a few benches and trees Children get a safe place to play and elders get
shade to sit in.

Build a footpath beside the main road People need not walk among the vehicles, so
accidents come down.

Start a small public library Every child can read books, even those who
cannot buy them.

Page 27

Class 4 The World Around Us Chapter 2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood AglaSem · NCERT Solutions

Why these count as good changes: a public facility is one that anyone may use. A
change that helps only one house is not a change for the community.

Q3 As a class, take help of the elders around you to list people in your neighbourhood
who helped the community during COVID-19. These could include doctors, nurses,
garbage collectors, shopkeepers, teachers and others. Discuss how they made the
community safer and why it is important to thank them.

Do this together as a class.

1. Ask your parents, neighbours and teachers who kept working during the COVID-19 days.
2. Write each name or each kind of worker on the blackboard.
3. Beside each one, write what that person did.
4. Make thank-you cards and give them to the workers you can meet.

Sample answer:

WHO HELPED HOW THEY MADE THE COMMUNITY SAFER

Doctors and nurses Treated sick people and gave everyone the vaccine.

Garbage collectors and cleaning staff Cleared the waste and sprayed the streets, so illness did not
spread.

Shopkeepers and vegetable sellers Kept selling food and medicines, so no family went hungry.

Police officers Kept people from crowding and helped those who were
stuck.

Teachers Taught on the phone and online, so our studies did not stop.

Ambulance drivers and delivery Carried patients and brought things to our doors.
workers

Why it is important to thank them. They went out and took a risk when everyone else stayed
at home. A thank you tells them their work was seen, and it makes them want to help again. It
also teaches us that our community stands on the work of many ordinary people.

Page 28

Q4 Can you list out the people involved and vehicles used in each of these services in
the boxes given below? An example has been given.

SERVICE PEOPLE INVOLVED AND VEHICLES USED

Police Station Police officers · Constables · Patrolling jeep

Hospital

Fire Station

Post Office

Library

For each service, name two kinds of workers and the vehicle they use.

SERVICE PEOPLE INVOLVED AND VEHICLES USED

Police Station Police officers · Constables · Patrolling jeep

Hospital Doctors · Nurses · Ambulance

Fire Station Fire officers · Firefighters · Fire engine

Post Office Postmaster · Postmen · Post van (and the postman’s bicycle)

Library Librarian · Library assistant · Mobile library van

Why each service has its own vehicle: the vehicle must do the service’s work. An
ambulance carries a patient lying down. A fire engine carries water and ladders. A
post van carries heavy bags of letters.

Tip: all five of these are public places. They give their service to anyone in the
community who needs it.

Long ago people sent news by drumbeats, messengers and pigeons. Then came the postal
service, the telephone, radio and television. Today we use mobile phones and the internet.
The post office collects letters from the postbox, sorts them region by region and sends
them on.
Flyovers and metro trains make travel faster, but the animals, birds and trees that lived
there are lost. Planting trees keeps a balance.
A bank keeps our money safe and helps us save for the future. An ATM gives us cash at any
time.
Public places like hospitals, banks, post offices, police stations, libraries and bus stations
serve everyone.
On a map, north is at the top, south at the bottom, east on the right and west on the left.
