CHAPTERWISE MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS FOR COMPETATIVE EXAM
SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS – I PUC
NAME OF THE CHAPTER: PERMUTATIONS AND COMBINATIONS

Multiplication principle:
If an event can occur in m different ways following which another event can occur in n
different ways, then total number of occurrence of the two events is m×n.
Addition principle:
If an event can occur in m different ways and another event can occur in n different
ways then number of occurrence of either of the events is m+n.
Pemutations:
A permutation is an arrangement of objects in a definite order.
Permutation of n distinct objects
 Number of permutations of n different objects taken r at a time, where repetition is not
𝑛ǃ
allowed, is denoted by nPr and nPr = (𝑛−𝑟)ǃ

 Number of permutations of n different objects taken r at a time,
where repletion is allowed, is equal to nr.
Permutations when the objects are not distinct:
The number of permutations of n objects of which p1 are of one kind,
𝑛ǃ
p2 are of second kind , …, pk are of kth kind and rest, if any, are distinct is p1ǃ p2ǃ…pkǃ .

Combinations
A combination is is a selection of some or all of a number of different objects where the
order of selection is immaterial.
𝑛ǃ
Number of combinations of n objects taken r at a time is denoted by n Cr and n Cr = (𝑛−𝑟)ǃ𝑟ǃ

Circular Permutations
 The number of circular permutations of ' n ' distinct object is (𝑛 − 1) !, if clock wise and
anticlock wise order of arrangements are considered as distinct.
 If clock wise and Anticlockwise arrangements are not considered as distinct then the
1
number of permutations is 2 [(𝑛 − 1)!.
