system a close relationship developed between the town and the
countryside. Merchants were based in towns but the work was done
mostly in the countryside. A merchant clothier in England purchased
wool from a wool stapler, and carried it to the spinners; the yarn (thread)
that was spun was taken in subsequent stages of production to weavers,
fullers, and then to dyers. The finishing was done in London before the
export merchant sold the cloth in the international market. London in
fact came to be known as a finishing centre. This proto-industrial system
was thus part of a network of commercial exchanges. It was controlled
by merchants and the goods were produced by a vast number of
producers working within their family farms, not in factories. At each
stage of production 20 to 25 workers were employed by each merchant.
This meant that each clothier was controlling hundreds of workers.

‘When we look at school results, girls perform as well as boys, if not
better in some places. But they drop out because parents prefer to spend
their resources for their boys' education rather than spending equally
on their sons and daughters. No wonder the proportion of women among
the highly paid and valued jobs is still very small. On an average an
Indian woman works one hour more than an average man every day. Yet
much of her work is not paid and therefore often not valued. The Equal
Remuneration Act, 1976 provides that equal wages should be paid to
equal work. However in almost all areas of work, from sports and
cinema, to factories and fields, women are paid less than men, even
when both do exactly the same work.In many parts of India parents
prefer to have sons and find ways to have the girl child aborted before
she is born. Such sex-selective abortion led to a decline in child sex ratio
(number of girl children per thousand boys) in the country to merely
919.’

1976? 1

After primary and secondary, there is a third category of activities that falls

support for the production process. For example, goods that are produced in
the primary or secondary sector would need to be transported by trucks or
trains and then sold in wholesale and retail shops. At times, it may be
necessary to store these in godowns. We also may need to talk to others over
telephone or send letters (communication) or borrow money from banks
(banking) to help production and trade. Transport, storage, communication,
banking, trade are some examples of tertiary activities.

Questions:
38.1: What is meant by the tertiary sector of the economy? 1
38.2: Give one example of the tertiary sector. 1

in recent times? 2
