The challenge of sustainable development requires integrating the quest for economic
development with environmental concerns.Traditional methods of resource use result in
enormous quantities of waste and environmental problems. Hence, sustainable
development calls for the protection of resources for future generations. Alternative
energy sources like solar power, wind, wave, and geothermal energy are inexhaustible
resource. These should be developed to replace the exhaustible resources. In case of
metallic minerals use of scrap metals will enables recycling of metals. Use of scrap is
specially significant in metal like copper, lead and zink in which india’s reserves are
meager. Use of substitute or scares metals may also reduce their consumption exports of
strategic and scarces minerals must be reduced so that the existing reserve may be used
fora longer period.
(a) Describe alternative sources of energy.
(b) What is needed for sustainable development?
(c) How can minerals be conserved?

Degradation of land resources is a serious problem arising from faulty policies of
irrigation and agricultural development. This is a serious problem because it can lead to
the loss of soil fertility. This problem is particularly acute in irrigated areas. A large part
of agricultural land has become barren due to salinity, alkalinity, and soil exhaustion.
Excessive use of pesticide chemicals has led to the concentration of toxic elements in the
soil profile. In irrigated areas, leguminous crops (pulses) have been displaced from the
cropping pattern. There has been a decrease in soil-related agricultural work in multi-
cropping systems. This has slowed down the excessive process of nitrogen on the land
and of nitrogen compounds.
